Re: [new Epson printer

I don't mean to carry on rumors, but its been on dpreview printer forum by
a number of people of receiving an email from Epson about a new pro
printer that sounds interesting (smaller, sleeker styling, good price,
etc.--no hint as to what print sizes altho' someone on another forum said he
had seen posts about a Pro 3800 which sounds as though its perhaps somewhere
between 2400 and 4800--and he said the suggested US price may be
$1000-1100). Since I'm in the market for a new printer, this does interest
me--the email from Epson said 9/27 (Photokina) so I guess we do just
wait--altho' I'll be out of town for 2 weeks and don'tknow if I'll have
internet or not. I was hoping that perhaps someone else had received
information about it also.

I would suggest to wait 10 days till Photokina is starting. HP
could have a 12 ink model too if the rumor is correct that I
heard last week. Early July they showed new wide format models
to a selected crowd. The best we can wish is happening: 3
competitors head on head.

Yes the new Epson 17-inch model is confirmed. Price supposed to be very affordable.

You may also want to keep your eye open for the new HP Z3100 that will also be released.
That printer comes with Quad Black and glop plus a bulit in i1 Spectro. 24 and 44 inches.

2006 will go down as the most exciting year for printers.

Thanks so much Joe. I just found the post on LL about the 3800--and now you
mention yet another. A good year to be in the market for a new printer--but
willing to wait since my old 2200 is still chugging along.

Yes, I just replied to Joe. Sounds like the best year to be in the market
for a new printer with 'choices'--and even more accoridng to what you
learned. I can afford to wait since my 2200 is still chugging along and QTR
handles my monos.

Has anyone heard more about printers using the new dye-based Claria
inks? Any prospects for large format printers?

Epson promo:

"On September 27, we'll unveil our newest professional printer. We
want to tell you about a new printer that's going to get your
adrenaline pumping, your heart racing and your imagination soaring.

For starters, it looks cool. It's sleek, slim, stylish and space
efficient. Think high-end sports car.

But, it's what's inside that will really raise your pulse rate. This
engineering marvel incorporates several radical new technologies. And,
of course, it takes full advantage of our already industry-renowned
Epson UltraChrome K3™ inks.

We've saved the best for last. Wait till you see the price. We think
you'll be not just pleased, but amazed.

So mark your calendar. Set a reminder in your PDA. And, put a note on
your computer monitor — SEPTEMBER 27 — it's the official release date
of what promises to be a huge new leap forward in professional printing."

Each new generation of chipped carts and new inks takes time, at the very
least, for third parties to reverse engineer and replicate. But, if the carts are
big enough, the inks are desirable enough, the product can print gallery
quality B&W as well as color with the OEM inkset, and the cost to purchase the
machine is significantly lower than previous generations, I don't see using OEM
inks as much of a penalty; I suspect that Epson is hoping users will see it
that way as well. With more competitive products from Canon and HP entering this
market, they may feel it necessary to offer more affordable ink prices as
well.

So while many on this list have, as their first reaction to any new printer:
"how soon can we rip this baby apart and print through it with third party
inks, and third party RIPs"... thats getting to be less of a factor, as the new
OEM products function more desirably without all that outside ink and driver
development.

Oh, and I should point out that the most money I've ever spent on a single
set of OEM carts for a printer (barring commercial size systems like the Epson
440ml carts, and the Canon iPF90000 carts) was not for an Epson, but for a set
of Canon iPF5000 carts: 12 130ml carts for nearly $900. Thats half the price
of the printer; just like spending fifty bucks on a pair of replacement carts
for a ninety nine dollar printer! <G>

LOL.
This sounds like it was written by a Japanese teenager doing a
marketing clerkship at Epson and then hastily translated into
English. It is ridiculously funny (to me). Since when are images like
"adrenaline pumping", "heart racing" and "high-end sports car"
associated with a photo printer?

Pretty soon they'll be telling us what a great date the printer
makes! <G>?

A good rule (and I should know, I keep breaking it) is never to buy within
the 6 months before a Photokina. Subtract another 6 months after Photokina
to allow for some of the bugs to shake out, and that gives us about 1 year
out of every two in which it's safe to buy. <VBG>
