OT_ RAW Conversion (Off list if you like)

OT_ RAW Conversion (Off list if you like)

2006-09-19 by Eric Neilsen

Recent purchase of D200 has me looking a bit more at RAW conversions. I have
yet to upgrade to CS2 as I have the whole suite and therefore need to
upgrade the whole suite and DNG will not work with CS.

If anyone can point me to their favorite reviews of open RAW conversion
software, it would be appreciated greatly. (Nikon Capture NX ?) I have been
testing the beta version of Lightroom for PC and it works fine. I also have
but haven't loaded it, the Picture program that came with the camera. I
really just didn't want another software loaded to test and have not heard
great things about Nikon software.

Thanks

Now back to the regularly scheduled B&W printing issues of the day.

Pixmantec (now owed by Adobe) had two RAW converters named Raw Shooter, one free and the other for sale. The pay version has been withdrawn by Adobe, but last I heard the free version (Raw Shooter Essentials) would be available for DL until the non-Beta Lightroom was released. It's a decent program.

  http://www.pixmantec.com

It's not for everyone, but if you either have Zone System experience or plan to work with it, LightZone from Lightcrafts is an interesting and different approach. It is not the best program for rapid throughput and I'm having a few nomenclature quibbles with them right now, but after a free 30-day trial, I bought it and use it frequently. It's only part, but a major part, of my arsenal! Costs nothing to see if it's for you.

  http://www.lightcrafts.com

There are reviews for, I believe, both on Luminous Landscape and Digital Outback. The LightZone site has links to a few other reviews. Seems people either love it or hate it.

  Peace,

  Karissa

Hi Eric,
Prior to finally upgrading to CS2, I did do raw conversion in CS.
I installed the latest ACR for CS and then downloaded ACR and DNG
converter for CS2. I would use that DNG converter to convert my camera
raw to DNG. At that point, I could open the newly created DNG files
within CS. I should note, the CS2 interface is much improved.

Cheers,

Bob

I had previously used PS CS raw converter for many Canon RAW files and some
D1X files. The DNG version that I downloaded is 3.4.X89. It converts the NEF
D200 files but PS CS will NOT open them. I find the Canon Photo Professional
work well for some 1D work.

I do see that there is indeed a brand new download for DNG just today. 3.5

I must show my ignorance here, What is ACR? The DNG files are still not
being opened by PS CS. I get an error message about the file format.

Hi Eric,
Download version 3.5 of ACR and DNG (you will use DNG only to
convert your files.
Next, download Camera Raw 2.4 from the CS updates. unzip that file
to your plugins/file formats folder.
This gets you the latest raw converter and the ability to open DNG
files in CS.

ACR is Adobe Camera Raw. The current version for PC is either 3.4 or
3.5, similar numbering for the Mac. When I got my first Nikon D2x,
ACR 2.4 was the last version that would run in PS CS (Not CS 2) and I
could not open my RAW files. When Adobe released a version of ACR
that would work with my NEF files (3.2 if memory serves) they made
sure it was NOT backwardly compatible with PS CS, it would only work
with CS 2, forcing me to upgrade if I didn't want to be bothered with
the DNG conversion (or other Raw coverts) process.

Hope that helps, Alan

Eric,

ACR is Adobe Camera Raw, the raw converter built into Adobe Photoshop. I am not familiar with the workings of the DNG files, I only deal with NEF files.. When I purchased a new camera (Nikon for me), I go to the Adobe website and download the new camera raw plug-in. Instructions for installation are on the Adobe website. Depending on your camera model you may need PS CS2 in order to get the correct plug-in. Don't blame Adobe, blame the camera makers. Adobe does a rather good job in keeping pace with the Raw changes. Another choice is to get a stand alone raw converter.

T, I figured out what was meant by ACR after I saw it in context and playing
the acronym game. I just click on my raw files and didn't pay attention to
what plug in name it might have within PS CS.

Alan, I held out and as Bob pointed out, and I have confirmed, CS can open
them with 2.4 and DNG. I failed to go look for additional updates to CS as I
feared that Adobe was trying to push me into CS2 too. Dan Burkholder
suggested Bruce Fraser's new book to me as another resource. I'll check into
that as he seems to discuss the DNG conversion within as well as ACR and
bridge.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
