Legion Photo Matte Comments

2001-08-15 by Steadman Uhlich

This message is cross posted to PiezoBW and DigitalBW forums so I apologize if you get two copies.

I used a sample sheet of Legion Photo Matte (LPM) on a 1160 with CIS using PiezoBW inks.

I always use my "test image" which is a portrait of a woman with jet black hair and very white/translucent skin, and 18% grey backdrop with large solid areas of grey in the image. I will leave the more calibrated step wedge testing to others.

I was impressed by the weight and feel of the paper. Reminds me of a high quality print on fiber paper. Ultra smooth finish that is even smoother (less tooth) than the HWRS (Photo Rag). The paper is a very cool white (cooler than HWRS). I laid the paper out amongst a range of 15 different papers I have from various manufacturers. I sorted based on warm to cool using a color corrected lamp. The LPM was the coolest. Cooler than but close to the tone of Conetech Matte. The paper is heavier and feels better in the hand compared to either Epson Archival Matte (EAM) or Conetech Matte.

I tested the paper with a Lineco ph test pen and got "neutral to acid free" results on both front and back of paper.

My impression is the paper is an excellent replacement for EAM. I printed the same test image on EAM and then LPM on the same printer, same inks, Conetech Matte profile. Both images looked very good. Almost identical. The only difference I could see was a tricky shadow area I use for evaluation. The LPM had a little more ink "smudge" in the shadow. Hardly noticeable. A special profile for the paper would probably clear that up. In any event, the Conetech Matte profile worked very well.

This seems to be a great paper for PiezoBW if you are looking for a very effective, cool tone, ultra smooth, medium weight, relatively low cost, acid free paper.

I wound up by ordering three boxes for further testing and use.

Clean Nozzles to all,
Steadman

Steadman,

Is HWRS the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag? If so where did you get it?

Thanks for the mini review Steadman. I have posted it in the Files section for
future reference.
