Linearizing Quadtone RIP with NK7 inks

Linearizing Quadtone RIP with NK7 inks

2006-10-08 by jreswick

Hi:

I'm new to this RIP and new to the group. I've set up a 9600 for
Cone NK7 inks, and I've been through the users guide (much of which
is still sinking in). I've been playing with the RIP for a few days
now, and have a question or two that I hope somebody can help me
with.

I have examined the curves through loading and right clicking on the
curve name in the text box of the GUI, for all of the 9600 NK-7
curves for the papers provided with the download. I observe that
all the papers have a fundamental configuration of the inks that
varies only slightly between papers, most noticably the K ink.

I am using a paper that is not offered, and consequently wanted to
configure a set of curves for my paper. As the NK7 inks use a basic
configuration for all papers, I picked a paper configuration that I
thought mught be closest to my paper; but I only wanted to perform
the last step of linearization, as test prints of the 21 step image
show that only slight modification of the linearization might be
necessary.

However, when I open the curve configuration tool, I see no existing
configuration entries for the paper that I have selected in the GUI,
on which to make any small adjustments. It seems unnecessary to
have to start from scratch. I have an EyeOne, and would like to use
it to perform just the linearization to dial in my paper. I've read
the EyeOne docs in the EyeOne folder, but that seems more geared for
building proofing profiles.

Anyone have any suggestions beyond adjusting the GUI front-end
controls to get as close as I can?

I have Monaco Profiler Platinum (4.8 I think), but I don't think
that can do gray profiles. I also have GM ProfileMaker 4.5 if that
could help.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

ADDENDA: I have reviewed the eyeone pdf again, and will try creating a
grayscale profile with the utility provided, to linearize. I'm still
curious why Cone's curves come up empty in the curve tool.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Curve Creator tool always starts with an empty setup.
You first have to open your profile by Menu - File - Open.
Here you can select any *.qidf in the Profiles sub directory.
Once you made your changes, you can save your file with a different
name. And don't forget to hit the "Create Curve" button, otherwise you
won't see your new curve in the GUI.
I hope this was a little help.

Gerd.

Kone did the curves themselves. As I understand it, they did not use the curve
generation software, but rather some process of their own to create the curve
files.
