Changing inks when using a CFS/CIS

Changing inks when using a CFS/CIS

2006-10-15 by david627890

Hello all,

Perhaps a stupid question: I have been trying the Cone NK7 and split
Sepia/Neutral K7 inks in an R1800, both using cartridges. With the
cartridges changing between the two is easy, however I would like to
move to a CFS/CIS system to reduce my ink costs. Is this possible
whilst retaining the easy switch between the two inksets? If I add an
extra three bottles to the CFS/CIS will I get issues with clogging?

Changing between the inksets with a CIS will never be as easy as it is
with cartidges. If you are going to be changing a lot, you would be
best off using refillable carts and bottles of ink to fill them.

The great thing about this new Cone ink formulation is the lack of
clogging and the smoothness of consistency, not to mention the perfect
neutral tone that never falters. I know in 6 months of running them I
haven't had a single head clog of any kind (I wish my Ultrachrome was
as smooth). I'm using the NK6 set but am also about to set up two more
large format printers with sepia and split tone capability. As far as
the neutral set goes, I see no breaking down of the components at all.
I haven't started using the sepia set yet but imagine it will be the
same. Oh man how I wish these inks had been available 5 years ago.

Having said all that I think ANY pigment should be shaken periodically
to make sure the pigment doesn't seperate even a little from its
base. A lot depends on how long you let the ink sit there. I assume
that is possible with most cfs units.
