Clearing the air about large format inkjet prints

Clearing the air about large format inkjet prints

2006-10-29 by mccarvill

I just made my first large format (23x33") prints and boy do they
stink. All that ink, I mean. The prints look fine. I'm using an Epson
7600 loaded with MIS UT7 carbon-pigment inks.

So now I'm wondering what kind of air ventilation / cleaning systems
are popular with people who regularly make large prints. Will the
standard air cleaners that remove cigarette smoke and dust also handle
ink odors?

What inks, I have never smelt anything?

The smell you are noticing is not normal. You may have a batch of
expired inks. Check the date on each of your ink carts.

Thanks for the reply.

The inks are new (July 06) and the smell only lasts about 24 hrs. So
I suspect the smell is probably normal - e.g. think about how much
ink is being introduced into the air. What I was looking for was air
purifier / cleaner recommendations to deal with the smell during the
first smelly 24 hrs. Opening a window in winter isn't a favored
option.

Cheers,

Mark

I again wanted to stress to you that the smell your inks are
producing is NOT normal. This alone should convince you that there
is something wrong. I would replace your inks.

I've used Canon, HP and Epson printers, they all stink while drying.
Some papers even have their own smell with wet ink.

You guys must have broken noses. The current UT7 inks have a distinct

Does it smell like dead fish?

My Ultrachromes smell like that when they off-gas. Really nasty when
I have 10 large 40x50 lusters hanging around. I've never found out
what it is. The K3 ink smells a little better.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Clearing the air about large format inkjet prints

2006-10-30 by Phil Radlick

reaction produces a very toxic mixture and should never be done!!

Best, Phil

IT IS! It is the smell of ammonia. I should have realized that. Cut
an ink bag open and dump bleach into it. Wonder what that would
do. ;-) It wouldn't clear the air. That's for sure.

Here's something that works for me: when I get nostalgic for the smell of fixer, I move the cat
box into my office for a few days...
