Signing prints: year image was recorded or year printed?

Signing prints: year image was recorded or year printed?

2007-02-13 by Wawi Navarroza

One quick question,
In signing finished work, which date (year) would you indicate: when the print was done or when the image was recorded on film?

I'm a fine art photographer from the Philippines.
I record images on film, hand-manipulate the negs, scan, and output on digital archival pigment prints.

Thanks much.

I write the follwing: R.Smallfield 2004/2007

Seems an elegant and simple way to solve the problem.

if you put the date it was taken (or made in the case of drawing, and
the date printed both -- with hyphen, then you include any work in
between: 2001-2007 it has always worked for me and if you need
the month: 2/2001- 7/2007

mine would sometimes read:
bottom left: 1/24 or open edition or nothing

middle to middle right: white clown (title)

far right: jean wall penland © 2001-2007 (© optional) and the
"chop" at the lower right hand corner after that

or any variation that feels right with the work itself and its size

probably no help, but that is how i do etchings, drawings, photos jwp/jno

Hi,

I date my images the year I make the final print for
presentation/exhibition. I create images from neg
files I shot over the last 30 years as well as my new
digital capture. Sometimes I'm creating images from
scanned negs done 10-20 years apart.

Peace,
