Odd ABW problem with 2400

Odd ABW problem with 2400

2007-02-13 by heningerw

I've always printed B/W picts on my 2400 with glossy stock (Museo, Innova and a few epson
glossy papers). No problems there.

However, I decided to try the matte cartridge on some enhanced matte paper I have. I
swapped the carts following the printer manual instructions. Read to go.

However, when I switch to Enhanced Matte (or even Heavy Matte) paper in the print settings
dialog, it changes back to "Color" and the Advanced Black & White Mode is disabled.

No amount of fidgeting about turns it on. I did this from both Photoshop and the GM verison
of Lightroom - nothing works.

In both cases, I'm letting the application (PS or LR) manage the CM settings. This is on a
Macbook Pro running X with the latest drivers from the Epson website.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Does the Mac know that you swapped the cart? Run Epson Printer
Utility and click the status button, to check. In the process of
doing so, it might make the Mac notice the new cart. Once it appears
to recognize it, try printing again.

Yes. The manual mentions how to do this, and yes it finds the new cartridge.

I'm stumped...

I'm understanding this is for a B&W print. Are you toning a RGB image
in PS? Have you tried no CM in either application. Or, you might want
to try sending the image to the driver as a "Greyscale" image and
toning the image in ABW.

Hi, I've read where ICC profiles are not used in the Epson ABW mode,
so I'm thinking it would be better to let Epson software
handle "color" management, rather than Photoshop.

I've created profiles with QTR-Create-ICC-RGB and used them with ABW.

Beautiful images by the way.

Yes, this is a BW print. The image is an M8 DNG, converted to grayscale in Lightrom and
printed directly from the print module. This is from Lightroom V1.0.

I've also opened a tiff from LR in Photoshop and seen the same problem - ABW grays
whenever you select any matte paper.

I've tried turning off CM in the app and handling it in the driver - same thing.

I have had the same problem on my PC running XP. I simply turn the printer off and then back on again and it seems to solve the problem for me. It happens when I change from PK to MK and then back again. Once the printer has rebooted I can then access the Advanced B&W mode.

Jeff

PS - Either Best Photo or RPM must be selected for ABW to be available.

Yes. The manual mentions how to do this, and yes it finds the new cartridge.

 I'm stumped...

Well, after an hour on with the Epson tech people this is what I found out:

On a mac (10.4.8) , you need to delete the printer using the printer utility and add it again. I
had to do it twice, and then the ABW was available for matte papers.

The 2nd level tech I spoke with said that the printer driver on a mac sometimes won't notice
the change (despite the fact that the Epson Printer Utility *can* see it - they use different
avenues for asking the printer thigns apparently).

Silly, but at least I'm back up and working.
