Setting for QTR Ink Calibration

Setting for QTR Ink Calibration

2007-03-08 by stanraucher

I'm about to give QTR (version 2.5.0.1 windows) a try and I want to do
an ink calibration. I have a few questions.

What printer resolution should I use for calibration and for printing
my images? (1440x1440 super or 2880)

What speed should I use? (unidirectional or bidirectional)

Also, the instructions say to have the ink calibration set all the way
to the left at 100. When I slide the tab all the way to the left, it
reads 0. If I move it all the way to the right it reads 100. What gives?

Thanks,

Stan

I use 2880 -- better dmax and no need to under print the 100% black. Go for
the best.

Here is a write-up of my latest QTR profiling exercise:

It might be of some help to you.

Paul, which printer and paper do you use for 2880? I tried this mode on
2200 using UT7 inkset with Moab Entrada and some other matte papers --
I see that MK, C and M inks are maxed on 35-45%. Is it normal? When I
dropped ink limits to those numbers, I don't see a real difference
between 1440 super and 2800 on calibration printout in QTR.

See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/QTR_2200_4K+_MBW-Carb-w7.pdf for the
ink limits I'm using on my 2200. While it's not UT7, it might be useful to
you.

Paul, in your report you have 65% for Eboni on PremierArt. I just
printed calibration page of PremierArt FineArt 205gsm in 2880 mode. I
still have maximum at 40% for Eboni, i.e. closer to what I saw for
Entrada than to your printer. In 1440 super Eboni maxes at 65% -- same
number as for Entrada. I replaced clogged head 3 weeks ago, therefore
my printer should print like a new one. You must be have a better
Eboni...

Do you think it will make sense to build profile with 40% K limit?

Thanks,
Sergei

The paper I was profiling was the Premier Art "Matte BW" (formerly called
Premier Matte or dual matte 210). Perhaps the higher load it can take
explains the much better dmax it gets than the PA 205. Premier Art has put
the apparently new coating on the Hot Press 325 also. One poster here also
indicated the 270 is getting the high dmax, but I have not yet tried that.
It's only coated on one side and might be a lot easier to feed than the
relatively stiff double coated 325.

Entrada had a coating that was similar to the PA 205, so I'm not surprised
it also could not handle the higher load. Likewise, it never had a very
good dmax in my experience.

No, it's probably the paper differences that we're seeing.
