R2400 has arrived!

R2400 has arrived!

2007-03-14 by hflockwood

Yesterday I took delivery of a new R2400. By the end of the day, I had managed to
produce a very acceptable print using the ABW mode, with guidance from Clayton Jones's
very valuable essays. Although I didn't time the printing of a full page (8.5x11) image, it
was very fast compared to my old workhorse, the 1160.

I examined the print with a 10x loupe. There were no dots, none. The tonal gradations
were very smooth everywhere. After I clean up my ABW workflow, I expect even more
impressive results. I then expect to switch over to QTR and MIS inks in the near future.
For now, I'm having a lot of fun with very little effort.

I have two dozen prints (made on the 1160) matted, framed and ready for an exhibit in
August at the Catamount Arts Center in St. Johnsbury, VT. After seeing the results from
the 2400, I'm going to scrap the lot and do them over. A labor of love.

Added notes:

The R2400 is a rather expensive printer, but as I mentioned in a previous post, Epson has
a "loyalty" program for repeat customers: 25% off in the case of the R2400.

Also, a previous post mentioned Bill Kennedy's book, "The Photographer's Guide to the
Digital Darkroom." I'll second the recommendation; it's an excellent book that cuts
through much of the arcana associated with getting a good print, either color or b&w.

Now I've got to get out there and take more pictures!

Hello Harry,

>Yesterday I took delivery of a new R2400...

Congrats on the new 2400. As you are already finding, it's a great
printer in many ways.

I also appreciate your positive mention of my articles. It is
gratifying because it has always been my goal to help people get
started quickly and easily and have success with a minimum of
frustration. So thanks for the good feedback and may you have many
wonderful BW prints and no clogs forever!

Regards,
Clayton

Harry, congrats on your new printer. Sounds like you're
having a blast.

Your comment on the loyalty program finally registered
with me. What was the deal? Does it apply if you are
replacing a busted printer or just have a previously
registered printer?

You mentioned a 14 day limit of some kind in your earlier
post -- meaning they offer the discount, you have 14 days
to take them up on it? Or some absolute date limits?

Thanks,
David

I'll respond to both Davids with this post.

My 1160 apparently died (turns out it didn't.) I called Epson to see about a repair. The
Epson person mentioned a "loyalty" program if I were interested in a new printer, and that
I had 14 days to exercise the option once offered. I took advantage of the opportunity to
buy an R2400 at 25% off. I was told that the program was aimed at people who have
bought Epson printers in the past (I've purchased 5 of them over the years.) When I
wanted to add extra ink carts, she told me that the program (discount) applied only to
printers, and that the discount amount was model specific.

The best way to get more info on the program would be to call the Epson Store.

Good luck.

Congratulations on getting a 2400. I have one and love it. The ABW
is incredible and really performs.
