Hello,
having read Livick's article http://www.livick.com/method/inkjet/pg1.htm advocating the use of ClearShield spray or liquid, I've contacted the local Clearstar supplier.

They told me that for Ultrachromes you can't use a water-based spray and have to use solvent-based ClearJet, not ClearShield, which Livick recommends.

I've found Ultrachromes to be water resistant so wonder if she's right. Livick's site doesn't say what inks he's using so that's no help.

I'm rather chemically-sensitive so would rather use the water-based product if it is compatible.

You were misinformed. Once the ultrachromes have dried on a 
water-resistant canvas (or paper) you can use water based varnishes.
