Sudden change in color. . .

Sudden change in color. . .

2007-04-16 by kolwicz@minetfiber.com

While I've had all kinds of problems
printing, this is a new one: I had been
getting nice neutral B&Ws with my Epson
2200/MIS Pro color inkset/Cathy's
Profile/Photoshop6, when, after a few days
lay-off, the same setup started giving me
beautiful, uniformly *mint green*, toned
prints; from Grayscale and RGB files.

The setup was exactly as it was for making
the profile and this is not the usual Epson
green/magenta crossover problem, there is no
magenta and the shade of green is different.

I checked the setup today and made some
changes, printing test strips from Gray and
RGB mode with different Gray color spaces
assigned; I renamed the old profile and
reinstalled the original. None of this had
any effect.

I thought that it might be the new batch of
Moab Kayenta, but I printed on the back of an
old sheet that had a properly neutral image
on it already - same thing. (Kayenta is
coated for double sided printing.)

Of course, the first thing I did was a nozzle
check/clean cycle and purge until I got a
perfect nozzle check. I had not changed or
added to the ink reservoirs between the good
and the green prints.

Do profiles go sour? Past the "sell-by" date?
Of course I'm kidding, but what should I look
for next?

Frank:

I had a similar problem with a Canon i9900. Printing beautiful images
for several months and suddenly all became overwhelmingly pink. Like
you, I checked nozzles, went through several cleaning cycles, used
different papers, and profiles, etc. plus few choice words aimed at
the gods that I sometimes respect.

As chance might have it, I was touted onto CCleaner -a free routine
for removing unused and irrelevant entries in the registry as well as
removing orphaned programs (I believe). Though I was not chasing the
pink problem when I invoked CCleaner, it apparently cured the problem.

CCleaner is free at www.ccleaner.com. Can't cost much to try it. Of
course, if you are enjoying a Mac, CCleaner is irrelevant.

Did you keep them lightly shaken? Inks can settle and produce prints of
different looks based on ink dilutions.

Frank:

Reinald had a good point, and if you are "enjoying a Mac" as I am, a
utility such as Apple's Colorsync utility may prove useful. It will
inspect and repair if necessary, your profiles. If it can't, then you
will know what to replace. Have you tried printing to different
papers (and different profiles)?

I have had pink images myself, and that is what I had to do.

Seems you've still got a clog... a job for Mr. Windex.

...IMO there's no such thing as "the usual Epson
green/magenta crossover problem" "Sounds more like someone comparing
original film or file (as seen in camera) to inaccurate monitor and
prints that result from attempt to match monitor.

I rely on Kayenta...better than EEM in every respect. Epson's canned
EEM profile works perfectly with it.

Thanks for the replies.

I've never had to shake 2200/MIS PRO inks and
I have left the printer idle for as much as a
month at times with only nozzle check
problems. I usually only print every couple
of weeks anyway and had been getting neutral
B&Ws for more than 6 months.

I use jv16 Power Tools for my registry
cleaner (PC, of course) and I'll run it as
soon as I can and test the printer, but I
have run it in the last month or so and
usually do so when I do a major clean-up of
the computer detritus that builds-up like the
dust rhinos do under my bed.
