K3 inks vs MIS - clogs

K3 inks vs MIS - clogs

2007-05-07 by Steve Kale

Hi All

Just an observation. I have been far too busy at work in the last three months and haven't
used my 4800 for some time. Today I finally got around to at a minimum printing enough to
clear the nozzles. I fired it up and rather predictably there were issues with the magenta, LK,
LLk and K (in which I have Eboni loaded) nozzles. A couple of head cleans and all the K3
nozzles are singing but the Eboni nozzles are a mess. I decided to print an A4 page of pure
black through the colour driver to help clear the K line. It didn't work and it appears K
(Eboni) is not firing at all but the A4 sheet is solid green-grey. The 4800 driver clearly
underprints some mix of LK and the other inks even when asked to print pure black. Maybe
not a surprise to some but it was to me. Now back to trying to unclog the Eboni...

I don't know how Cone formulated his new K7 inks but I have three
printers going with them and the black channel has not clogged once,
and the others are very slippery as well and only very rarely show any
tiny break in the nozzle pattern ever. Way less trouble than any other
inks I've used.

Actually there are two things that can cause bad nozzle patterns. One
is ink cloggs the other is rag paper lint accumulating in the piezzo
nozzles. With the K7 inks the inks never clogg in my experience, but
of course rag paper dust is always something to watch, especially with
big jobs.

I've had terrible clogging issues with Piezo K7 inks in my R2400. I
loved the look, but I finally had to switch back to K3 inks after
wasting incredible amounts of ink running cleaning cycles. Atfer I
switched back to K3 inks, 3 cleaning cycles and I was good to go and
have not had one clog since.

After receiving my R2400, I made a few initial prints, then had to go
out of town and powered it down. Circumstances did not allow me to
get back to printing for seven months. After powering it back up, I
only had to run a couple of nozzle cleanings and it was good to go
with the K3 inks. I have had no clogs since with the K3 inks.

I was using UT2 on my 1270 for a while until I got so sick of clogging
(it's fine when it didn't clog..).

Now I just use a 4800 with K3.. I figured the UT2 carts + shipping +
time wasted + hair loss unclogging would pay for the printer quickly.

(I only needed 1 auto-nozzle-check page to unclog the 4800 when left
off for more than a month..)

The older printers -- 1280 and older -- just were not the same as the ones
today.
