Running two inksets on the same machine

Running two inksets on the same machine

2007-05-08 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
in order to save money I ordered some MIS Pro inks ... but then had another idea: desirous of the achieving the economy and lightfastness of the MIS UT7 inks, but also needing to do *some* colour printing, I wondered if it was feasible to swap the whole inkset between Greyscale and Ultrachrome for batches of colour and BW printing.

I figure it's no different than changing from matte to photo black, except I'd be changing all seven carts.

Is there any reason why this would be unworkable? (Except for the nuisance involved and having to do my colour and BW printing in batches rather than on demand, as I can now with the more expensive Ultrachromes.)

I can't afford to run two machines and don't have the space either.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard

Whilst I believe it is possible if the formulation of the two inksets
is compatible, for example the K3 inks with the Cone K7, and indeed the
Cone website suggests this as a solution for printing both B&W and
colour from the same printer, I suspect you will find that you use a
lot of ink in flushing out the previous inkset each time you change.
As a result I am sure that you will very rapidly cover the cost of a
second printer just in ink use.

Can you perhaps stack your printers so that you can fit several in the
same desktop space? I have mine stacked 3 high - 3800 K3, R1800 Cone
K7, R220 MIS UT-R2, and apart from juggling USB cables don't have any
problems.

I think you will have to run flush carts in between or else you will
ruin your machine, things will gunk up.

Can't see where you note what printer model, but the "matte black change"
comment makes me assume the R2400. Yes, some users swap compatible carts between
color and B&W on machines like the 2400. Its a far bigger deal on wide format
printers, however. You could also load MIS PRO inks, and swap out only the
Yellow cart for B&W printing, and get extremely low metamerism B&W prints from it
using that configuration, though you would probably need a PrintFIX PRO
profile for it to get that to function via the RGB driver. If you are using a
RIP, then whatever RIP curve process you use could be adjusted for that.

It's possible, but a nuisance. The UT7 and MIS Pro inks are totally
compatible. They are the same inks, in fact. One is just a blended inkset
of components of the other.

If you're running a 2100, have you tried QTR with the OEM ink arrangement?
At 2880, the 2100 may be smooth enough for you with just the LK and MK or
PK, with the LM and LC doing the toning.

I am currently using the 2100 with QTR at 1440 - I was looking for a cheaper lightfast ink and thought that the UT7 would be both cheaper and more lightfast - but I do need colour, too. It does sound like this arrangement of two inksets would be more trouble than it's worth, so I may just go for the MIS Pro with UC magenta/light magenta.

Thanks all of you for your suggestions,
Richard
