Epson Premium ICC profiles fail to install on Windows Vista

Epson Premium ICC profiles fail to install on Windows Vista

2007-05-16 by Dana H. Myers

Sharing a little experience here that may come in handy for others:

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate Edition on a machine here this weekend,
and then downloaded and installed the Epson driver for Windows Vista 32-bit
(I started at http://www.epson.com/vista and clicked on the link for the
R2400).

After installing the R2400 driver and verifying that the printer works,
I then
installed the "Premium ICC Printer Profiles Epson Stylus\ufffd Photo R2400"
from the Epson support and downloads site. The installers for these
profiles
ran without complaint. I had previously installed these profiles on a
Windows
XP machine without problem.

Note that I primarily do B&W output using ABW, and this was already working
as expected under Windows Vista. I also print color output from time to
time,
so I want the Epson profiles. Without them, color output is awful (too
dark),
as is monochrome output not using ABW.

However, under Adobe PhotoShop Elements 5.0, I did not see the
Epson premium profiles. Using the Windows Vista color profile manager,
I did not see any of these profiles.

I looked in \Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and did not find
any of the Epson premium profiles. I looked on my XP system, and the
profiles *were* installed in this directory, so I manually copied the
profiles
from XP to my Vista system.

I can now use the profiles as expected, and the print quality on Epson
paper (tested with EEM so far) is basically the same as it was under XP.

So I figure there's an issue with the Epson installer for the profiles,
and I called
Epson customer support. That turned out to be a complete waste of time :-(
Perhaps Epson is re-calculating the profiles for Windows Vista specifically?
