PrintFIX Pro 2.0 soft proofs in CS2

PrintFIX Pro 2.0 soft proofs in CS2

2007-05-24 by David Keenan

I just finished making a mess of ICC profiles for my new Epson 3800 and the
K3 inks with the various papers I use with PFP 2.0. I created the Extended
Gray profiles as well as ones without. I am printing grayscale images.

When selecting one these ICC profiles using the View | Proof Setup in CS2,
many of proof images displayed appear to take on a color cast. One that
comes to mind is a tad reddish; another just a hint of green. Others do
appear more neutral. And, yes, I recently color profiled my monitor.

When printing one of the more reddish proofed files, I do get a very nice
b&w print free of this cast. The image NOT displayed with soft proofing
enabled more closely matched the print.

(The ICC print does appear to be a bit deeper in tone then an ABW print
from the same file. Both printed using Qimage software. Up until today I
have been a very happy ABW printer but the ICC profiled print process for
black and white looks promising.)

So, I'm wondering about the soft proof process...

There is some business in PFP about set "paper white" and "monitor black"
that affects soft proofing. I didn't change these from what the program set
after reading the patches. In most cases I read the 700+ set of patches +
the extended gray patches.

Any guidance on soft proofing what to expect would be appreciated.

Dave.

Dave, Did you also try to soft proof in Qimage? And did they also show the
color cast?

Yes, if you wish to tweak paper tonality in softproof, the Reference White
control would be the place to start. Check out the help on that feature. I
assume your "slightly pink" profile, and your "slightly green" one are from a
highly whitened, and an unwhitened paper. Adjustments of the b* value should
compensate for whiteners, or lack thereof, in the softproof.
