help with Epson R2400 after driver update

help with Epson R2400 after driver update

2007-07-20 by robertsonlauri

Hello,

I have been printing merrily for 2 years on my Epson R2400 on VFA through the regular sheet
feeder--After choosing VFA, a warning would come up, "Manual-Roll Required". I would hit
"ignore", and print, rarely having a misfeed.

I've just upgraded my system, from a pc to a Mac, from PS CS2 to CS3, and to an updated
Epson driver. Now, if the sheet feeder is chosen in the page set-up dialogue, I can't choose
VFA (or USFA or Watercolor) because they are greyed-out. If a manual-roll option is chosen
in the page set-up, I can choose VFA, but am no longer able to print through the regular
sheet feeder--apparently must use the rear feeder, which I've never done, and don't want to
do if I can avoid it. (Parenthetically, with the old system, I could not access "Photo RPM", now
I can.)

Question--is there a way to keep printing on VFA through the regular sheet feeder in my new
system? It's also an issue because on Paul Roark's great advice, I use a lot of Premier Matte
210 gms for which USFA paper type and profiles are used (per ITSupplies website).

Thanks, and thanks for all the great teaching on this form--been lurking for a while.

Lauri

I'd like to use this option, too, because Clayton Jones recommends it as the best setting
for precise B&W.

"Manual Roll" is a pain and you can not run anything smaller than 8.5 x 11.

I used a PC, but I am considering to purchase a mac next time I
upgrade my hardware. For thick papers, I normally use the rear feeder.
Sometimes, however, a thin paper uses ticker paper profiles, like for
example Premier Premium Matte uses epson ultrasmooth's. In such cases
you need to use the sheet feeder.

Kevin,

No, I haven¹t, but I¹ll give it a try as soon as I get some replacement
cartridges shipped to me on Tuesday.
But I suspect I¹m going to learn something new. I¹ll report back.

Hi Harry and Kevin,

Thanks for responding to my post.
I want to avoid the rear feeder for convenience--my printer's in a tight space, and I'd have to
keep moving it. Also, I keep hearing horror stories about rear feeder feeding problems. And
per Kevin's responses--I think Clayton Jones uses "ignore" manual/roll setting on the older
driver. And again, wanting to use USFA settings for Premier Matte 210 gms.
But it sounds like I may not have a choice, better go the attic and look for the rear feeder
tray!

I had too little space for my printers too, Lauri, until I added a
cart from Anthro.com and put my 200 and my 2400, backed up to each
other, on its top shelf. There isn't room for the cart all the time
either, but it's on the optional larger casters and easily rolls away
from my corner-unit workstation to another corner where it isn't in
the way. When I'm ready to print, I roll it up the workstation
temporarily and connect via USB.

This arrangement wouldn't work, at least not very well, for printing
from the rear feeder on the 2400, but only because I've been storing
printing supplies on the cart's bottom shelf. The 200 could go down
there, and the 2400 could then be fed from any direction on top. Or
the 2400 could go on the bottom, so you could have a 3800 on top.

Several configurations are possible, but of course none of them work
unless you have some place you're willing to keep the cart when
you're not printing. However, it could be pretty far away if you can
print wirelessly. I haven't done much homework on that, but I would
rather than give up a paper I really wanted to use.

Lauri,

I can¹t contribute further just yet because I suddenly need to replace one
of the cartridges on my 2400, and I had to order some. Delivery expected on
Tuesday.
I haven¹t used VFA in some time, so my recollection may be faulty, but I
believe I used the drop-down tray intended for thick papers. I¹ll get on
this as soon as the new cartridges are here.
Kevin¹s point is that there is a problem with 4x6 printing of VFA. I¹ll get
to that as well, but I suspect I¹ll merely confirm his observation.

Try selecting another paper, Epson Enhanced Matte, or whatever it is
being called these days.

Proof paper for Silver Rag?

2007-07-22 by Bob Builder

Can anyone recommend a paper to proof Museo silver rag? (Similar
characteristics - lower cost)

Thanks ..Bob

Re: Proof paper for Silver Rag?

2007-07-23 by Steven Karafyllakis

Bob, it's going to be hard to find a good match among the inexpensive
papers, but the new one I mentioned a couple posts back, the Red River
UltraPro Satin 2.0, MIGHT work, it being warm-ish and with a comparable
Dmax, at least with Epson inks. A slight adjustment curve might bridge
the gap enough to make it useable?

Shilesh, your simple solution works perfectly!--printing on VFA through the regular sheet
feeder, with VFA profiles, but EEM as the paper choice. Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: Proof paper for Silver Rag?

Bob -

I have had success using what used to be called Epson Professional
Glossy Paper, aka Glossy Paper Photo Weight. The SKU code was S041388.
Unfortunately it is no longer made. I just happen to have quite a lot
of it. I think this product may have morphed into Epson Proofing Paper
Commercial Semimatte, but I can't confirm that for certain since I
haven't seen it in person.

Scan & outsource prints

2007-07-24 by Lew

I realize this is not in the spirit of this group, but I may be in the position of having to scan my b&w film
negatives, process the scans in Photoshop & then email them out for printing. (The time/quantity issues are
way beyond my capabilities). How practical is this, and are there some really good resources that do this
reasonably?
Thanks (& don't be too hard on me).

I'd like to scan my bw film negs & correct them in Photoshop, but send them out for inkjet printing. Are there
good resources out there that would do a really good job at this?

Ok. I'm in Brooklyn, NY, and, unfortunately, cost is an issue. I'd do the scanning myself. Thanks, group!
