Calibration problem

Calibration problem

2007-08-15 by Daniel Bourgade

Hi every body,
I'm a news comer in this group that has been recommended to me,
after a first reading of some topics I'm sure that someone in this
group will be able to help me.
I'm working at the calibration of my color workflow, my tools.
Soft: Monaco EZ color
Screen prob: Optix XR
Scanner : Epson Perfection 4490
Printer ; Epson R2400

My problem:
When I'm doing my profiles for paper/ink combination using my
scanner, the profile gives a magenta cast to my grey scale. the
Print after calibration is thus magenta (red) and a little to dark.
Is some one experience the same problem, and more of all found a
solution?

The problem is the same for the color printing.
X rite tells that the OB of the paper is the reason but does not
give solution. (actually my tests with other paper gives similar
results)
Of course I'm using QTRip for full B&W photos and the result is
perfect.
BUT, I'm doing photos in B&W with only one object having one color
in it. So, I've to print in color mode.

Any help and/or experience on these subject are more than welcome

Thanks in anticipation.
Best regards.
Daniel

Hi Daniel. I'm afraid you have picked a most difficult area to deal
with. Using a scanner to profile paper and inks to your printer for
color is difficult enough though marginally possible. However the
difficulties exponentially expand when trying to balance colors over
the neutral and near neutral tones. Even using a spectro with profile
software to do this is very very hard. The PGP spectro package spoken
of here by some apparently has special functionality set up to do this
very thing and is well spoken of. It also would greatly enhance your
color profiles as well. (Note that I do not use one and have no
financial interest in the plug.)

Another method you might try is to use QTR's capabilities to
accomplish the same thing. You would need to learn how to use QTR's
curve creation capabilities and blend in colors to get your toned
B&Ws. That can be done. In all events, it will be some work on your
part to accomplish what you need.

Sorry if this isn't good news for you. Most of us at one time have
been down the road you are traveling.

Regards
Duane

Hi Duane,
Thanks for your answer, I know that I'm on a difficult area and I
thing that I've to fix my problems step by step.
First try to find a way to have no more red cast when scanning a IT8
target print on paper with OBA. To try to have a good result with
color printing.
Any advise are welcome.

Then I'll dig more for my B&W/Color photos.
About QTR, Thanks for the advise, it is not the first time that I
ear that it is possible to print color with it. But I don't know
how, I'll dig more, try more.

About calibration device, I'm thinking about buying a PrintFix
package with its spectrocolormeter but I do not have enough
information about this device yet. I'm afraid to go for it and ear 2
month later "it is not the right tool, you should get this". It is
exactly the issue with my actual equipment.
Any feedback is welcome.

I don't what is PGP but I'll investigate.

You see Duane I'm still confident but know that it is a tough
journey. And Advise about ideal material
 here I'm afraid by the
price.
Thanks and best regards
Daniel

That is the package I intended to refer you to. Several of the folks
here have given it good marks.
