Printing Problem

Printing Problem

2007-08-25 by Bob Builder

I'm having a problem getting my prints to match my screen. After all
the editing in CS3 I go to print and the print preview shows a
picture 2 stops lighter with a color shift. Proof colors shows just a
minute color shift. ( to be expected )

1. The monitor is calibrated.
2. Printer profile: PRO38 PLPP (Epson 3800) W/Premium Luster Profile
3. No color adjustment.
4. Photoshop manages colors.
5. Document Profile Adobe RGB (1998)

Same picture converted to BW.
ABW preview also shows about a 1 to 2 stop lightening.

It's driving me nuts.

Can anyone help?

..Bob

hey bob,

If your doc looks correct on your monitor in the adobe rgb color space, and you're using cs3 on a
mac (i've heard printing problems persist w/ the 3800, cs3 and xp/vista), make a duplicate of your
file. convert the color space of the duplicate to the 3800's premium luster profile before
printing (choose edit - convert to profile - pro3800 pgpp - adobe (ace) - relative colorimetric -
use black pt. compensation - use dither - click preview then ok). the resulting conversion should
be very close to your orig. next soft proof your doc by creating a custom profile (click view in
the menu- select proof set-up - custom... - pro38 pgpp - relative colorimetric - simulate paper
color - save). at this pt. your new custom profile should appear in proof setup menu. select it,
then click view again and select proof colors if it isn't already checked. if your printed doc
isn't fairly close to what u see on the monitor at this pt. then u've got more issues than i know
how to resolve.

otherwise, call epson and adobe - and good luck!

Printing Problem

Tom..

Thanks for your reply..

I will try your suggestion today. My only question on your method is the
use of Ace rather than Adobe RGB (1998).

I'll let you know what happens. Thanks.

Epson says it's Adobe's problem and Adobe says they're "working on it".

Re: [Digital BW] Printing Problem

hey bob,

the choices are either adobe color engine (ace, the default position) or apple's color management module. adobe does not address the relative benefits of one over the other in the user manual. in my experimentation, both gave identical results so i chose the default. your results may vary. let me know if they do. however, my technique may not work for you. i implemented it to correct exposures that were printing too dark, not light.

Hi Bob, I can only comment on the BW images printed with the ABW driver:

I use the 3800 with CS2 (should be similar) on a PC. I had the same
problems (1-2 stops too bright) when printing with the advanced BW
driver. What helped the problem was to set in the "Print with preview"
window to "no color management" (not "let PS determine colors"). In
the printer driver window you select the paper type that ressembles
your paper and print. According to the paper type you may habe to set
"tone" to darker, darkest or whatever applies.

Also you should convert BW images to grey 2,2 gamma.

Maybe you can at least sort out the problems in BW.

Bernie

This helped my BW printing, for color I cannot help you.

Bernie..

Thanks. You're method will work for BW but not for color. I can only
get color to match the preview with "let printer control color". This
is not the way it should be! ..Bob
