Is this epson message for real or just a marketing ploy

I'm getting a message on my epson 2200 saying parts in my printer are nearing the end of their service life and that I should contact my service person to replace them. The printer seemed to be working fine, but this message disables my ability to clean heads- possibly other functions as well. Is this for real or just a way to sell parts. Is their a way to circumvent the blocking of features even if I actually do have to replace parts. Mike
