Zeroing in on CIS

Zeroing in on CIS

2007-09-06 by hflockwood

I'm about to commit to a CIS system for my R2400.

Although I was a steady customer of MIS back in the day of my 1160, I'm now looking
seriously at the Cone K7 system.

If I have it right, this consists of the ACC-N4S-R2400 (Niagra IV from Media Street) feeding
system coupled with seven (+1) 4-oz bottles of grayscale inks from Cone.

I haven't read much about this system here, so I'd like to get some feedback from current
users.

TIA

Harry

Harry,

I have a Niagra CIS in an old Epson 1280 with Cone K6 inks. It produces a
beautiful matt print - far better than even the quadtone Cone Inks I used
before. Compared to the quadtone system, I picked up a whole new range of
subtlety that was missing.

In my opinion, a CIS is the only way to go once you have decided on a
particular inkset for a desktop printer. The cost per print and capacity
are far better than individual cartridges. The Niagra CIS is well thought
out and easy to install.

I am sure that the same will be true for your 2400. Depending on your
application, you may want to wait a little. Cone is releasing an MPS inkset
that will work with glossy and matt papers with 6 dilutions of ink and a
gloss optimizer for the 2400 and other 7 ink printers.

Best Regards,

George Pappas

I would also consider the efillink CIS. The hardware, in my opinion is much superior to the Niagra and I have used all three systems.

Thanks, George. I agree with your comments on CIS; I have many empty 4-oz
bottles from MIS to prove it.

I¹ll look into the MPS set as you suggest.

Harry, contact Ron as below. He is of great help with his system and it is a very clean system and since it is dry, you could use any ink you might wish. I removed the Mediastreet from my 1280 and 2400 due to excessive clogs. The efillink system has been in use since 06/26/07 with no clogs. Just do not over fill the ink jugs. 1/2 to 2/3 is best. The holders match the R2400. If you should decide to use this I have one other suggestion. Let me know.

Charlie,

Thanks again. I’ll follow up by contacting Ron, as you suggest. What “K”
inks do you use in your system? And are these the same inks that caused
clogging in the Media Street system?

Re: [Digital BW] Zeroing in on CIS

2007-09-08 by Charlie Thomson

Hi Harry,

The only Inks I have used other than the OEM's that came with the printers has been Medaistreet. I started with 1280 and as I printed I had clogs which cleared after cleanings. Near the end of the first 4oz round the clogs came more often. I ordered the 2nd round of ink for the 1280 and had major problems. Clogs, Color Balance off so far off I could not correct it. I ordered an R2400 to replace the 1280 and mediastreet CIS. This was installed as the first ink in the R2400. As I used the 2400 the clogs came more often. The main clog was the LK. This ink supply ran low and a 2nd round was ordered. The LK still clogging. After bringing the ink levels up with net new inks the LK clogged so bad I could not print an LK nozzle check. I used a purge program trying to print with LK only. I could only get very bad banding. Mediastreet had no real help. I actually ran enough cleanings that I used 2 oz of ink. Nozzle checks showed random clogging. I thought the NEW (less than a year) 2400 was shot. I looked for help and was answered by Ron. Ron immediately came to my assistance with "FREE" cleaning carts for both the 1280 and 2400. With his help the R 2400 was completely cleaned. New OEM's were installed and Print was back to normal. I then ordered his Efillink Pro, along with his inks. The hardware and inks were received in about 10 days. Installation went smoothly although I was a little tense about it. I fired up the R 2400 on 06/26/07 and had no problems. Then I completely filled the ink reservoirs and this caused some ink drags. I then removed about 30cc from the reservoirs and the ink drag went away. I cleaned the ink pads with Windex and tissue (from excess cleanings of mediastreet ink) and I have been printing great. I have been doing Photography since about 1948, having a darkroom with two 4x5 enlargers. Although I did both B&W and color work over the years with a JOBO, I am hooked on digital. I get great B&W from Ron's ink and very well color balanced prints.

I recently went to Eastern Shores of VA and MD and the printer was left off for over 2 weeks. When I started printing my test prints of the trip there were no clogs.

Ron's system looks nice, as there are no bottles scattered at the end of the printer. An enclosure that had lights that signals when ink is low and matches the R 2400 in color and style. It is also less expensive.

I broke one of the pickup plugs but Ron has 2 spares taped in the top lid on the CIS unit. I have since used a small pair of angled pliers to gently clamp on the thick part of the plug and rock it back and forth to lift for ink insertion.

There are video instructions on the Web. I shall be glad to give you any suggestions based on my experience.

Thanks again. I’ll follow up by contacting Ron, as you suggest. What “K”
