Using MK with F-type papers?

Using MK with F-type papers?

2007-10-06 by chriskjezp

I know Platinum Rag was designed for MK ink. But I just read an
article by Royce Bair in which he states:

"Using PremierArt's Print Shield in combination the Matte Black ink
over top of all of the papers (except the Ink Press Fiber Gloss, which
benefited little by this application) produces some incredibly rich
blacks, especially on the Crane Museo Silver Rag."

From this it seems it's possible and perhaps even desirable to use MK
with Silver Rag? That's the first time I've ever heard of this, so I
just want to be sure I'm not misunderstanding.

Reason I ask is I love the F-type papers (have tried Harman Gloss,
Silver Rag, Platinum Rag and Innova F-type so far) but hate switching
back and forth from MK to PK on my R2400.

From what I've seen, the problem with MK being used on a PK surface is lack
of adhesion. So if you are very careful not to damage the surface and have
taken care not to apply more ink than the substrate can hold, a protective
spray will allow you to use MK. I have not run those test with the specific
materials in question and I'd not try to roll or brush on the coating but
only spray it on.

I don't think any of these FB glossy papers is very good with MK -- at least
Eboni. With Platinum, the best dmax I've obtained (L 4.9) is with the 260,
MIS PKN, QTR BO. Eboni smears and has gloss differential. The Epson driver
on this paper does not reach a very high dmax with at least the MIS PKs.

I am using the Innova Semi Matte and Innova Ultrasmooth Gloss with MK
on a 9600 all the time now. Before it is sprayed it looks horrible,
as with PK also. After two light coats of Premier Art it looks just
like PK after it is sprayed. I have had not a single issue with
adhesion with Epson K2. My clients love it. I'm so happy to be able
to use this material without the nightmare of switching to PK. I have
profiles for PK also and if anything the only difference after
spraying is a slightly better dmax with MK.

These papers do scratch easily before printing, but that is an issue
with the emulsion, not the inks. You need to handle the paper
carefully before output.

John, so you see no easy scratch off and marring just a "horrible" look. How
is that horrible look described?

John,

I'm glad to hear you're having good results with MK and a glossy
paper. I've wanted to try Innova Ultrasmooth Gloss for some time, and
now I'm even more motivated. I'm using MK with Platinum Rag with good
results, and if I could add another glossy paper to the line-up
without switching to PK I'd be happy.

Question: are you using the ABW mode? What paper type do you select
in the driver (because with MK installed none of the glossy paper
types will appear)?

Side note: the article I read by Royce Bair said something similar
regarding Silver Rag, i.e. using the MK produces ugly results until it
is sprayed with the Premier Art shield, at which point it looks very
good. Has anyone tried this with Silver Rag? (I would, but I don't
currently have any PremierArt Shield on hand).
Thanks,
Chris
