K3 Inks in a 4000?

K3 Inks in a 4000?

2007-10-06 by Louis Dina

Please note: I also posted this on the Epson 4000 Forum, but have not
had any responses (it's a little quiet over there). So I apologize
in advance for the cross posting.

****************

This is really a color question, not B/W, but this group is diverse
and there is a lot of expertise here.

I am curious if anybody has used the Epson K3 inks or the MIS
equivalent (for the 3800 or 4800) in a 4000?

Of course, the LLK ink could not be used, since the 4000 driver
doesn't recognize a 2nd light black ink, but the ink formulations in
the K3's are different and I'd expect they are probably wider gamut.
(I know I would need new custom profiles).

If you have used them....

Was it an improvement?

What about Dmax and overall color gamut?

More or less clogging?

Other thoughts?

Thanks, Lou Dina

Lou:

I'm running both a 4000 and 2 4800's in color mode.
There is very little discernable difference between the UC and K3 inksets in
MK mode. There is quite a bit of difference in the PK mode as you suspect. If
you are going to print on matte papers, save your hair. Same result. I have
Imageprint loaded for both, and use the IP profiles and again, matte papers
print pretty much the same.

I've been using the MIS K4 inks (minus LLK) with funnel fill carts in
my Epson 4000 for quite awhile. Works very well for me, for both
color and B&W work using the Colorburst X-Photo RIP and QTR. No
clogs, good color gamut and reliable printing.

Carl/Richard,

Thanks for the responses. I suspected there might be some extended
gamut and less bronzing on gloss/semigloss/luster papers using the K4
inkset with Photoblack. I didn't realized that the matte results
were nearly identical, so that is helpful.

I appreciate it.

Best regards, Lou Dina

" Of course, the LLK ink could not be used, since the 4000 driver

Is there a way to trap the driver to use all the eight inks sets? I think I have read this somewhere.

When you pick the paper type, you set the Epson driver to use one or the
other K ink, not both.

Unfortunately, no, not even with a RIP. This is hardwired in the
firmware and would require some serious hacking to get around.

Carl. are you saying you have been unable to use multiple grays even
with QTR?

Steve,

No, you just can't use the PK and MK channels at the same time. It
would have been nice to be able to add an LLK ink to one of these
black slots and still keep all of the color slots, but Epson reserved
that configuration for the 4800 which was already in the works when
they were selling the 4000.
