Photoshop "Less Than" 6.0

Photoshop "Less Than" 6.0

2002-02-01 by Carl Noble

Adobe's "upgrade to 6.0 specifically says, NOT for the LE product, but only for previous "full" versions. Except for e-bay, I've not found any firm selling an "old" version.

I would have thought that there would be a market for the versions 4, 5.5 as "used". Does the Adobe contract forbid it? If so, then the e-bay offerings would be illegal.

I know that I could borrow an old version & activate the "upgrade" & give the original back, but I think that's called cheating -- & I don't want to do that.

Thanks for any info.

BTW, I'm new to this group, but very impressed with the info & the good will expressed. The concerns expressed over the "proper content" seemed mild compared to other groups & was (is) handled maturely.

Cheers,

Carl (in snowy Chicago)

Not only is that called "cheating", it's also called "stealing". Besides,
you need the original version serial number to install the upgrade.
Therefore, whenever you went to the Adobe site, it would think you
were your buddy, etc. etc. You made a good decision by not doing
that.

Anyone who sells old or used copies of software is "supposed" to
destroy all of their backup copies, completely remove it from their
machine and supply you with the correct original serial number.
They cannot then use that same serial number for an upgrade. (ie:
buy the upgrade then sell you their old version) Anyone selling on
ebay that does not do this is also breaking the rules.

Greg,

gotcha, but I still wonder why I've found no firm selling the older versions. The upgrade is $149 on Adobe's site, and new is $609. A "buy now" for 6.0 is $414. So I would expect version 5.5 to be selling somewhere near the "buy now" less $149 less some inconvenience cost.

I heard awhile back that about 50% of the software in use is "stolen" -- not counting the legal (for some products) use on a second computer -- as long as you don't violate the "one user at a time" principle. Any updated info?

Cheers,

Carl

I think many of the companies buy back old stock when they release the
new versions. Maybe just for that very reason. I dunno for sure if Adobe is
one of them or not but I have heard of some having a buy back program.

One of the smarter things (IMHO) is that Corel continues to sell old
versions of their Corel Draw at a discount until they are all gone. This lets
new users get their software (and hopefully like it enough to later upgrade)
without spending the whole retail price. That's how I got my first version. I
have since upgraded several times so they made out with me.

If you go to the Abode site they have a whole page about this subject. If you buy it and the other person had been the rightful owner you can "transfer title" but if the original owner had used his copy to upgrade then all bets are off. The best thing to do is to find a small computer store that has a older copy and is looking to get out from under that unit that won't sell and strike a deal.

Carl,
We bought an unused, un-registered copy of Photoshop 5.0 on ebay for about $90
(and registered it with no problem) and then eventually bought a new 6.0 upgrade
(and registered it with no problem). All perfectly legal, straight forward and
affordable.
