R1800.....?? 3MK possible for other printers, perhaps larger format?

R1800.....?? 3MK possible for other printers, perhaps larger format?

2007-11-15 by Sarah Renkes

I keep reading that this printer is still quite popular, especially in conjuntion with Paul's
3MK approach. I am dying to try this out myself as A) I am a huge fan of "regular" BO
prints on my 2200, and B) I am in the market for a new printer.

But......

........what about the banding?? Steve K, you mentioned going through several of these
printers with no luck. Are all the rest of you having NO issues with yours?

I am confused as to whether to take the plunge for the 1800, as I do want to try 3MK, but
don't want banding problems.

Still trying to sort this out....any opinions most welcome!

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah,

The only time I have seen banding with my 1800 was in the mid tones
of a step wedge used to print single ink channels for calibration.
In this case it occurred in the M and R channels. I have not had any
banding yet in actual prints using Paul's 3-MK system with both Eboni
on matte papers and PKN on RC/fiber papers.

That is why 3 channels are used instead of one. I know of one person who
had to put a 4th channel to smooth out his particular 1800, but so far it
appears 3 channels of Eboni do the trick -- at 2880 with QTR. 1440 bands on
my 1800.

I did the same - from 3 channels to 4, simply duplicating the GLO
curve and adjusting the inks limits -. I had no big issues with
banding but it would sometime appear in uniform midtones. Now with the
4th channel I've yet to see banding. Excellent!
