Epson 1400 and BO printing

Epson 1400 and BO printing

2007-11-17 by j.ludvigh

Hi All,

I have done a search and have not been able to find out if the Epson
1400 can be used in a black only mode. My 1280 has just died and I
am looking for an affordable replacement. All the reviews of the
1400 report that while it is excellent with color, the results for
B&W prints are not very good. My 1280 had a similar problem when I
used all the inks, but produced excellent prints, even better than I
could get in my wet darkroom, when used in the black only mode. More
than half of what I print digitaly is B&W so very good performance
is needed in this area. So, my questions are does the software that
comes with the printer allow black only printing, and if so are the
results as good as with the 1280 in the black only mode? I print
almost exclusively on glossy paper.

Thanks in advance,

Jay L.

Hello Jay,

A side issue from your main question, but here goes anyway: I recently
acquired a used 1280 but it's got very low mileage judging by the
cleanliness inside and out. But that's the problem, it wasn't used
enough and I'm afraid the nozzles have clogged from disuse. I get no
output at all. It's got some 3rd party color and b/w carts installed.
Also included were two sets of Cone black inks, still in their sealed
packs. The original owner had attended the Vermont workshop but
apparently abandoned this manner of printing. Not sure what to do
now... a friend says I should install those Cone prints and the
printer just might work.

What happened to your 1280?

Thanks!~

Paul

I suspect that the best way to unclog is to put in a set of Epson dye inks
and go through some cleaning cycles. After you get a clear nozzle check,
then install the Cone inks.

Make sure that you run some cleaning fuid through the heads before
installing the Cone inks. Dyes and Pigments don't like to be mixed in the
head, if you do you'll really know what a clog is!

Paul,

Go over to the (Yahoo) Epson Printer Group and look
for posts by Art Entlich. He offers a comprehensive
printer cleaning manual, but you have to personally
request it from him by private email. He has lots of
good suggestions.

Paul... Pigment inks and dye inks do NOT play well together. You can replace
Ultrachromes with Cone Piezotones without flushing. You cannot replace Epson
dyes with Ultrachromes or Piezotones without flushing. Otherwise, the real
clog from he##.

Thanks very much, all of you. I won't have time to try your
suggestions now, am leaving the house for about a week. Won't be
convenient to a computer either to follow this thread - sorry about
that! Thanks again, Paul
