Interesting discussion here of the 4990 and it's "true" resolution:

http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00EL2j

One person even claims it's true max resolution is 1200 dpi! But even
if it is higher it seems the contrast drops so much by 4800 it starts
to really affect the end result. Could be why I find the 2400 a good
compromise I guess.

Seems Epson has always sort of exaggerated it's resolution numbers.
But having used an Epson 1200U as my first transparency scanner, then
the 2450 and now the 4990 I will say I'm fairly pleased nonetheless,
at least for medium format scans.

Loads of other discussion under a Google search of "Epson 4990 true resolution"

Richard,

I actually had the 1200S (SCSI connection) before I started scanning
negatives. It was a great little scanner!
