3-MK MIS eboni black printing on Epson R1800

3-MK MIS eboni black printing on Epson R1800

2008-01-23 by sparta_0321

I have just purchased a refurbed R1800 and the MIS eboni black inks to
in order to use the 3-MK process that Paul Roark describes.

I read the Great Paper Chase and selected a few papers, but found many
that are listed are no longer available. I have ordered EEM, Prem.
Art Smooth Hot Press 270, Hawk Mtn. Condor BW and Merlin Natural and
some Moab Lasal.

My question is do I need icc profiles for these papers, and if so do I
use the standard ones provided by the paper manufacturers. I am yet
to download QTR and read up on it, but I seem to recall that there was
a way to profile your paper/ink for use by QTR with a flatbed scanner.

If anyone would like to provide some setup and starting out tips, or
direct me towards a thread if I am reiterating questions already
asked, I would be quite grateful.

Regards,
Tai West

With respect to papers, be sure to read the sections (links to small
PDFs) in http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800.htm that relate to
papers for that particular system.

QTR includes profiles for many papers, including those that are
reviewed in my notes.

See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Making_B-W_ICCs.htm for some
notes on using a flatbed scanner to linearize profiles.

The "Notes" tab of the 3MK-Dmax-test and 3MK-Start profiles in the
QTR 1800-3MK folder have instructions for how to make profiles for
new papers. So, go the the Curve Creator (Tools>Curve Creation) and
then open those profiles, which are in /Profiles/R1800-3MK, You'll
see the Notes tab.

Good luck with the system.

Paul is, of course, the expert on this, but I would encourage you to just dive in. Something
like the EEM profile works pretty well for many papers, and you can get astonishingly good
results even without doing your own profiles. The 3-MK / R1800 system seems to be less
fussy than most B&W printing systems.
