Epson Exhibition Fiber and Hahnemuehle Baryta papers

Epson Exhibition Fiber and Hahnemuehle Baryta papers

2008-02-04 by pglombick

I have previosuly used my R2400 with K3 inks on matte papers with good
results. I recently ordered some of the new fiber papers and I am
having a few problems. I am cutting 8.5" x 11" sheets into 3 pieces
(4.25' x 8.5" (1) and 4.25" x 6.75" (2)) so that I can print three 4" x
6" test prints.

I have three questions:

1)On the far right inch or so of the prints, there are faint vertical
lines and the ink density is slightly fainter. I watched it print with
the lid up and it seems to start where the paper comes out of the rear
rollers and it advances using the front rollers only. I used to have
this problem with my R300 when printing on snall sheets or two near the
front or rear margin.

2) The prints have a line of spaced pock marks along the left side, as
if it was punctured by a sharp roller. I have heard of pizza wheel
marks before and was wondering whether this is what they are, and, if
so, how to get rid of them?

3) Do I need to a print head alignment each time I switch to a paper of
a different thickness? Would adjusting the paper height setting help
things?

Other than these problems, I love the look of the prints. I have not
tested the papers to any extent yet and I can only offer first
impressions. The surface of the HM Baryta reflects the light more than
the Epson and also seems to have a slightly mroe textured surface. Both
are fairly similar in warmth. I have not compared versus Harmon gloss.
They both open up shadow detail and appear sharper than prints made on
VFA.

Thanks for your help.

I sure would appreciate some feedback on how to fix pizza wheel marks
on the R2400 using EFP and HM Baryta papers. I am also curious if
anyone else is having these problems.

Also, print quality is poor in the far right of the prints, where the
print leaves the rear roller. Anyone else experience this problem?

Thank you.

Hello:

I'm wondering if you are feeding through the top feed slot or from
the back. The straight path might help avoid the quality problem in
the far right. You could also attach a sheet of paper the same width
as your sheet (such as Epson Enhanced Matte) to the back of the sheet
about 6 inches long to give the paper more stability as it passes
through the printer. I often use acid free masking tape for these
types of things, and you can de-stick it a bit by sticking it first
to a shirt or pant leg. The key is not damaging your paper when you
remove the tape.

You can search for "pizza wheels" or "ejection wheels" for some
solutions on the Stylus Color 2200, but I'm not sure about whether
the same advice applies with regard to the wheels on the R2400.

Hope that helps,

Andrew
