Interest in seeing K7 gloss? Let me know

Interest in seeing K7 gloss? Let me know

2008-02-22 by Tyler Boley

While working with this new Selenium K7 inset from Cone and attempting
ink and gloss optimizer setups in the RIP to use with a few of the
newest photo papers, it occurred to me to post this here, in hopes it
would not come off as a solicitation. Several decisions need to be made
about the process here-

What do demanding B&W print workers think of it?
Should I continue to perfect it and offer it as a service locally?
Can I afford to devote an entire printer to it?
... etc...

It also seems to me people here might be very interested in seeing the
results for themselves for many reasons, clearly it seems to be a niche
approach at this point, and an intriguing one. Seven dilutions, the new
photo papers, etc..
I am not interested in having sample prints become part of my business,
or try to promote them as a product by which to profit.
It looks to me like I can produce and mail a package with 2 letter size
prints, one on Ilford Gold Fiber Silk, and the other on Innova Ultra
Smooth (same as Epson Exhibition Fiber) for $6.00 a package. Of course
they will all be the same image, of my choice.

So, my question-
-is there interest?

Obviously I will have some up front costs, so interest ahead of time
would be good to gauge. I don't need commitments, just interest.
What do you think? If there is interest I will provide a link when
ready, please do not try to request samples on this list, that's
important. This has nothing to do with Inkjetmall by the way, I think
they are working on their own papers and profiles for it. Not sure, I'm
off on my own with this stuff...

Thanks,
Tyler

Tyler,

I'd be very intereted both in seeing the samples and
purchasing the profiles for QTR for papers that I don't think Cone is not
planning to support like IGFS.

Tyler, I'd be interested to see them if you are willing to post to the UK.
I've been sitting on the fence about the MPS inks for a while (I've even got
a spare 4000 to put them in) so you might help me make my decision.

Re: [Digital BW] Interest in seeing K7 gloss? Let me know

2008-02-22 by Tyler Boley

OK folks, that's enough for me. I just belatedly realized asking the question requires
inundating the list with the various replies. Duh!!
Mark, no connection to IJM at all, they know nothing about this. I have no idea if the way
Jon is working out his profiles and setups will even look anything like what I'm doing. I'm
certainly not trying to raise interest in theproduct for them, just want opinions for the
reasons I stated. In fact, they might not even like that I'm doing this...
Mike, I don't use QTR, and would not be making ink setups and profiles for it. I'm not sure
I could even tell someone else how to go about what I did here. Lots of trial and error with
StudioPrint and spot channels.
These will be double pass prints by the way...
Enough for now. I'll post in a week or so with a link to order them.

Thanks all, really apreciate it.
Tyler

Re: Interest in seeing K7 gloss? Let me know

2008-02-22 by wwodets

Tyler,

Yes I'd like to see it. It is my impression that this is where high-
grade printing is going to end up--on the new papers with something to
control the surface reflectance. Right now we are matching ink
characteristics (gloss) to paper surface and counting on fortuitious
combinations. Of all the new papers I've tried (now five) with the K3
inks I am using in the 4800, the Harman Gloss is the only one that
provides an acceptable surface and gloss consistency. So I think this
is a very important issue.

Thanks, Walt

Hey everybody, I got what I needed to know for now.
The only way this will work for this price is with minimal time and
energy here, and a bulk approach, so I won't be giving individual
attention to people. I'll put up a link for you to place orders when
all is ready, probably paypal.
I'll figure out something for overseas too.
Thanks again,

1800??

2008-02-23 by TFielder

I've been thinking about the Epson 2400 because I understand that it
already has the black inks. However, the R1800 is reduced to $329 @
CompUSA. Should I jump on the 1800 or is it better to step up to the
2400? I guess the big question is, do I have to buy a full black ink
set for the 1800 and not have to buy the set for the 2400? That would
level the field a bit.

Thanks for your feedback.

There is much greater difference than just the inks. The main
difference, in a nutshell, is that the 2400 can do excellent BW out of
the box, with nothing else needed. The 1800 cannot do that. It
requires at least 3rd party RIP software, which means more work and a
steeper learning curve.

There are other differences. The 2400 uses K3 inks which have very
good lightfast qualities and work well on the new fiber glossy papers.
I think I'm correct in saying that most people who use the 1800 for
fine BW work also use 3rd party inks rather than the 1800 inks. This
means using CIS units or refilling carts.

The 2400 performance is a due to a combination of the K3 inks (with 3
blacks which give great tonal gradation) and it's ABW mode (Advanced
Black and White) software driver, essentially a built in RIP which
uses mostly the the 3 blacks with some colors for toning. It also has
a tone selector (from blue cold through neutral to warm to sepia) in
the driver that makes it very easy to use.

The 2400 results are exceptionally good, but can be improved upon
(mainly by gaining more control over the color inks). The 1800 is
used by people who are willing to put in the extra effort in exchange
for some benefit, usually falling in one or more of these categories

- less expensive bulk inks
- eliminating Yellow
- eliminating C and M (only using LC and LM)
- using all-carbon ink sets
- using gloss optimizer (Glop) in one channel
- want to try other inks

(all of these can be done with a 2400 as well, but if you're not going
to use K3 with ABW then these's no reason to pay extra for the 2400)

These benefits come at a cost: you must be willing to:

a) learn to use a RIP and get comfortable with ink profile curves and
other technical stuff in order to master the system and get the
results you want, and

b) put up with the inherent hassles and extra tinkering that goes with
refilling carts or maintaining CIS units.

So it comes down to whether or not you would be satisfied with the
2400 results with it's ease of use. If you desire to go beyond that,
will what you get be worth the extra work and learning curve? Some
people love to tinker and enjoy, or at least don't mind, that part of
it. Others are not so inclined and are exceedingly thankful for the
2400 which has freed them from all that.

Article #9 at the link below outlines a good workflow for the 2400.
It will give a good idea of what working with a 2400 is like.

Regards,
Clayton

note that both models have a $100 rebate.

epson's clearance center also has a good deal on refurbished R1800. i
ordered one last week at a net price of $280 with free shipping. for
some reason, the price went back up this week so the compusa sale
sounds like a great deal.

i plan on using carbon inks on mine. also, the R1800 has a smaller
droplet size - 1.5 picoliter.

See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800.htm for my write up of the
R1800 100% carbon printing workflow.

It's true that for good B&W with the 1800 you need QTR ($50 rip) and
MIS Eboni. But from my perspective the advantages of 8 channels and
1.5 picoliter drops was such that I, in effect, traded my 2400 for an
1800.

Re: [Digital BW] Interest in seeing K7 gloss? Let me know

finally, we have paper, we have paypal set up, we have prints... we
have cake!
We also have a very slightly higher price, due to some costs I failed
to factor in the first time. But still, it's stupid cheap.
So, I'll put up a post within the next hour with the purchase link.
Please keep in mind, the only way I can afford to do this at this
price is to have the entire process automated. I can't give any
individual attention, or respond to emails direct to me for orders. I
can't take the time to figure individual postage costs for every part
of the planet for each one of these, so it's a flat price that
includes everything. To do international as some requested, I just had
to come up with something based on a distant and exotic locale, and
call that the flat price for all international.
Some emailed me of their interest directly, I may not have all those
emails still, so please see the upcoming post.
For those who expressed initial interest, thanks for your patience.
