RAID image storage (OT)

RAID image storage (OT)

2008-03-14 by Rick Colson

Just a caution about an EBay seller (superldg) who offers inexpensive
multi-bay drive cases: I know that many photographers, myself
included, have been looking for cost effective RAID solutions. Don't
expect to get one from this seller: superldg. I have had a dual drive
Firewire to IDE case from him that never worked properly.
(Spontaneously "unmounts" from the desktop, often in mid operation.)
His responses to my emails have always been evasive and uncooperative
and he always blames the problems with his case on the drive
manufacturer, Apple, some other software vendor, Oxford (the maker of
the chip in the case) etc. He has never, after numerous emails,
offered a solution to the problem or offered to fix or replace the
case. I have spent far more than the cost of the case trying to get
it to work, with different hard drives, different computers etc. all
to no avail. Avoid this guy's cases like the plague.

I can tell you that Oxford has had problems for many years (don't ask
me how I know). I believe most recent Lacie multi-drive enclosures have
finally gotten working bridge chips. Unfortunately you have no way of
knowing this information so buy from well-known companies.
