K3 ABW matte black & Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl??

K3 ABW matte black & Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl??

2008-03-19 by lovelipp

I've been using HPhotoRag forever and always matte black ink.(Until
recently, UT7 on a 7600 and now K3 on a 7800). Today I tried a sample
of Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl and am stunned by the difference. The
image is sharper, richer - it really pops. However, when looking at
it from the side, the deep blacks look matte while the rest of the
photo grays out in a sort of reflective shine. The HPR looks like the
ink is IN the paper, the HFAPearl looks like the ink is ON the paper.
I have the 2 images side by side on the wall - and looking at them
straight on, the print on HPR looks absolutely washed out. I know
you're not supposed to use matte ink on a luster paper, but the
result is stunning as long as you look at it head on. It's still too
wet to spray.

What do the mavens say about this?

(BTW: Michael: I got rid of my 7600 and the 7800 matches the couch.

Perfect Arlene! You are brilliant.

Not only do we try to harmonize with the decor - new furniture becomes
the justification for an upgrade!! "Geez, honey, that old printer
worked fine, but it just doesn't go with the new couch ...." ;>)

Congrats on the new printer!

Best,
Michael

Arlene,

If you get a coat of glop or PrintShield on the Pearl print you will
see an even larger difference to the HPR print. However, if you put
both under glazing there might not be that much difference after all.
See this thread for more on using MK on glossy/pearl papers:
