to get a spot meter, do some "Zone" experiments, etc. & I see that you can
spend lots of $ on them. Any recommends?

Hopefully you can go to a store and try a bunch out, as they differ quite a
bit in terms of ergonomics and features. One of the main things you should
concern yourself with (once you've decided on price, etc.) is how well
shielded they are from flare, particularly if you'll be working outside most
of the time. My first meter was a Soligor (lots of flare), then onto a
Pentax digital (quite a bit better), then to a Minolta digital (excellent)
which I've had for the last 10 years. Some of the newer models have more
gidgets and stuff.

All that being said, I question the practicality of trying to apply the Zone
system to a 70 year old 35mm camera. Also, unless the shutter and aperture
are calibrated and consistent, your results will be all over the place.

Any opinion on using the zone system with lower end 35 mm cameras
like Yashica? I bought one last summer for cheap access to the Contax
Zeiss lens system (focusing on lens quality over mechanical
perfection). And I always bracket.

But I've already had some shutter reliability problems and have to
send it in for repair. Should I just bite the bullet and get a Contax
camera body? Other recommendations?

Thanks

I can't say what you should do with your old body. But, I can tell you that
you will not regret owning a Contax. They are sheer joy to work with.

Scott

Moreno,

Thanks, good advice, I plan to check out the camera carefully. I talked with an experienced repairman & he said that if it isn't good, he could fix it for abt $100. He said the old Leica's are like vintage watches.

I'm hoping!

Carl
