Cleaning carts needed when switching from OEM to Eboni?

Cleaning carts needed when switching from OEM to Eboni?

2008-07-07 by Paul Whiting

I'm trying to set up my R1800 with Paul Roarke's 3MK approach.

Do I need cleaning cartridges or not? I'm seeing what appears to be
conflicting information on the MIS website. I still have the OEM carts
in the R1800 and plan to replace the PK, MK, and GL positions with
Eboni ink. I've capitalized the parts that seem to disagree.

1) on this page http://inksupply.com/epsonclean.cfm

I read this:

Purging Desktop Printers
Cleaning cartridges for Epson printers are not normally required on
Desktop printers before installing MIS inks. However, if you have been
using inks from another 3rd party, like Lysonic, you must purge this
other ink from the printer before installing the MIS ink. IF YOU HAVE
HAVE ONLY HAD EPSON INK IN THE PRINTER, CLEANING CARTRIDGES ARE NOT
NECESSARY. This does not apply to Continuous Flow Systems. A new
cartridge set is required to change inks on a CFS.

2) but on this page: http://inksupply.com/R1800_bo.cfm

I read this:

The full color cartridge set is offered here for your convenience, and
are exactly the same as our MIS cartridges for the R800/R1800
printers. If you are currently using R800/R1800 inks that are not OEM
we recommend switching to Inksupply.com color inks to avoid ink
compatibility issues. ADDITIONALY, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU USE
CLEANING CARTRIDGES TO CLEAR INK FROM THE LINES PRIOR TO THE USE OF
EBONI and before switching back to the original Photo Black and Gloss
Optimizer cartridges.

---------------

Maybe what makes the difference is using Eboni...

Thanks again, everybody.

I've made the round-trip once so far with an R1800.

If you are using non-OEM dye-based inks they might conflict with Eboni
and cause clogs.

I went from Epson OEM to 3MK to MIS R1800 color ink without a problem.
If you put Eboni in the glop position it might take a cleaning cycle
or more to fix (I decided not to try it and put the third MK
elsewhere). It's pretty easy to swap the positions using QTR (but
then you will not be able to print matte color using the Epson driver).

Thanks, Roger... actually I'm not planning to use dye-based ink at
all. I'll use the MK and BK positions and the GLOP position for the
Eboni, leaving the other five color positions as is. As those five go
down simply from startups I'll refill them with MIS cleaning fluid
since I don't plan to do color.

So, help me clarify here... you did not use cleaning carts in MK, PK,
and GLOP before installing the Eboni?

Thanks again!

I do not own cleaning carts and did not use them when I put MK in R,
B, MK and PK to test the printer. I went from OEM to Eboni just fine
and then went back to MIS pigment without incident.

Cleaning fluid is a good idea for the other color positions as if
anything happens to one of your channels a replacement will be ready
to go.

Thanks very much, Roger, that's quite helpful. Paul
