OT - Yahoo Adv.

2002-02-09 by lyonscox

Ok,

I understand Advertising keeps this stuff (I do some myself as a job)
up for free but tonight I'm a bit annoyed when I click to continue to
the message and it gives me a SECOND AD. Can't tell me I'm Clicking
to get to the message, then Mr. Yahoo, not give it too me...you have
to change the click-through label :-|D (sticking my tongue out ;-)

Right on!

I am definitely an EX-YAHOO FAN. I'm playing around in other lists to
see how they run and I can tell you, Yahoo is the worst. I've sent
emails to a couple of list managers suggesting they email Antonis and
try to lure him away from Yahoo... Antonis, have they reached you?

The popup + click through is so obnoxious I can't deal with it.

I've installed Symantec Internet Security software and turned on ad
blocking and also use a popup ad filter. Between the 2 of them they
seem to stop about 75% of the images at least... Yahoo is so
obnoxious you still get a blank page to click through, but at least
you miss most of the dumb yahoo ads and the page loads faster.

Me, too. I noticed my spam level increase substantially following my
subscription to this and other Yahoo lists.

If the ads are really bothersome, why not change your preferences (in Yahoo) to
'plain text' (no HTML) only?

What am I missing. Is there an option to change to text only. All I
have ever seen is an option for the text format not for the page
format. If you are keeping a secret from us...well you will just have
toi pay the price my friend. ;-)

Mike,
In looking at the Yahoo settings, I thought that the 'Do Not Convert to HTML'
button would prevent the ads from coming in...Apparently that is no so?

Tom, Cleavis, All,

I agree that the ad level has gotten out of hand. Antonis and I
certainly have no objection to relocating the group, but lack the
resources and knowledge to make it happen.

The biggest barrier to moving is how do we take the existing archive
of several thousand posts with us to a new location?

It would be nice to be on a commercial free server but since this is
a non-profit enterprise that is not an option.

If anyone knows how to move and take everything but the ads with us
let me know.

Martin

Jee Tom, I just love those little camera ads with the good looking women....

Seriously, that is why I switched to emails only, the "continue" stuff is really annoying.

How about speaking with Philip Greenspan at www.photonet.com. I have obtained

Martin-

Given that set of requirements, I will step up my search for a
possible hosting situation. It's not realistic to get ad free, but
most sites are much less intrusive...i.e. standard banners and no
popups.

I know that some of them also have filters, much easier viewing of
headers with expanding threads, etc.

I don't know if all the issues can be met...this may wind up the best
place to stay given volume etc, but I'll be glad to volunteer to head
up a project and write up a report for the list members and yourself.

If anyone wants to work with me, why not email me offlist and we can
divide up the work and info we already have, summarize it and post it
back here in the open.

Look at the Yahoogroup homepage and look up ad free groups. All you
have to do is pay Yahoo and they will remove all the ads from your group.

Do you people who are complaining about the ads read the list off the web or
have the emails sent to you?

I have them sent to me in Plain Text and I get no ads, no HTML. Then I set
up a Rule in Outlook Express which files each email from this list into it's
own folder inside my mailbox. I do the same for every list I'm on and it's
quite orderly and sensible.

And for the times you need to go to the website, a free ad-blocking/privacy
program like Guidescope (http://www.guidescope.com/home/) really makes a
difference.

Peter.

Todd's routine works for me too, although I use Eudora (because it
was better documented due to Adam Engst's Visual Quick Start guides)
rather than Outlook Express, which I've also come to think is much
more of a security liability.

I would certainly appreciate any help and suggestions on this.

Greg,

Can you give me some directions on how to get there? If this can be done, I
would certainly consider it, if the price is not too steep!

Thanks,
Martin

Todd-

I read it all on the web... Gives me the flexibility to thread the
messages or look by date.

And I'm not complaining about ads...it all has to be funded somehow,
but about the intrusive click-through ads that interrupt so
obnoxiously.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
