Best Overall Paper for 2400, disregarding price or finish.

Best Overall Paper for 2400, disregarding price or finish.

2009-03-22 by james

I was wondering what the oppinions are for the best paper in 11x17 size:

-any finish
-any price

I'm trying to figure out what paper has the best detail and color range. I'm putting together a portfolio and it's going to be behind plastic so i'm not that concerned with texture. I've been leaning towards hahnemuhle but I wanted some outside oppinions. Some of the pics will be color, some B+W, different kinds of subjects, etc.

Thanks,

-James

My favourite papers so far, for colour saturation, d-max, and detail, are, in this order:
- Epson Exhibition Fibre (called Traditional in some territories) (you said price did not matter!)
- Hahnemuhle Fine Art Baryta (too much sparkle in the texture, but the colour is great!)
- Innova Fibre Semi-matte
- Ilford Galerie Gold Silk Fibre (if you take price into account, this goes near the top)

As for matte papers, there are some nice ones, but they don't have the colour saturation that I want.

I use matte paper only and have tested lots of them. My favorite is Epson VFA. It has better dmax than HPR with the K3 inks, is incredibly sharp and detailed, and is generally superb. If you'll be using any matte paper then you should try some.

Clayton

You might want to try PremierArt Alise for matte.

I have to agree here. I've been doing a lot of printing lately on Epson VFA and really like it a lot. Like Clayton, I use the K3 inks and VFA is hard to beat for most images. I like HPR and Hawk Condor BW too.
