Say that you've heard that there's a special on a Dell 22 inch 2209WA flat panel. I got mine for $222.60, including shipping and tax. This is an eIPS panel that quite good for photo editing. Peter

My contact is Tim Insley (sorry I don't have his email at home). The last time we bought monitors, we bought Samsung 226BW or the newer version with the height adjustable pedestal. I don't use them for calibrated imaging, but they are certainly a really good monitor. The price when we bought the last batch almost a year ago was around or under $250. The 226 is a widescreen 22 inch monitor. We currently have 16 of the older 226BW and 5 of the newer version. One of the newer version was defective and Tim got me a replacement in very short order (also helps that his office is in the same "mega city" *). I'm sure he can get you a good price on any other Samsung models. * as cities expand they eventually grow to the townships around them making what I call a "mega city", just part of the urban sprawl.

Juan, call up Chromix here in Seattle and see what they advise. They do tend towards the high end stuff, but would certainly have some good advice for you, and maybe even a package deal. My experience with more budget oriented dealers is that they don't realize the requirements for good digital photography work. But conversely, high end dealers tend to not have much sympathy for the user on a budget... C. I agree. Chromix spends a lot of time with you on any product, and they are quite knowledgable. They do have high end stuff, but they also have deals on those items occasionally. I got very good deals on both a UV cut iOne and an Eizo monitor- at different times- much better prices than anywhere else at the time. It pays to keep in touch with those guys if you're looking for gear, plus the info they provide can be valuable for decision making. Let me know if you want the email for my contact and I'll send it to you. Also find out who has the contract for your school, purchasing normally pushing things right through when you are using the contract vendor. I would not hesitate to use one of the Samsung monitors that we have here for photo work, and would of course want to calibrate and profile each one though. With the money available per machine, there aren't too many choices to be made. If you don't already own a calibration/profiling suite, you really should buy one for the site. Our photography department doesn't know the first thing about profiling their monitors, really sad with the amount of money they have spent on good monitors to only use the canned profiles.

Canned profiles for monitors??? I seem to recall Bruce Fraser calling such things a 'cruel joke' in his Colour Management book. I don't know James, maybe these guys are right. Heck, they're right down the block from the OP, international leading experts on anything color management, just days ago touting to me on the phone how great the new Spyder3 is, among the few Eizo supported devices, bla bla bla. From the other input here I can't imagine why anyone'd want to add their input to the mix. They wasted my time on the phone with way too much helpful information and I wasn't even shopping. Hate when that happens <G>. Tyler --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, James Irelan <james@...> wrote:
