Canon 5D MkII - Moisture Issues?

Canon 5D MkII - Moisture Issues?

2009-04-10 by Louis Dina

I was all set to buy a 5D MkII awhile back, when I heard complaints about weather proofing and failures in light moisture and cold weather (Luminous Landscape trip to Alaska). That put my buy decision on hold.

I'd love some feedback from users on this forum. Has anybody used their 5D Mk II in wet weather? Results? Problems? Thoughts? Has Canon made any changes to the design to correct this issue (if it is an issue)?

Thanks, Lou

It is a real issue - I was on the trip.

Basically you can't safely take a 5DMk2 out in the rain - even with a
plastic cover on it (condensation).

But you get what you pay for - in this case a cost effective prof camera
that works great in the dry but not in the wet. If you want both then you
have to pay double the money.

I have used mine in the snow using a storm jacket and have not had any
problems. Although, I would be out with it for 10 - 20 minutes then
back into the car to wipe it down. Haven't tried it in the rain, but
usually don't shoot in the rain.

If you have problems, Canon will cover it...

Well the two Sony Alpha 900 bodies could stand the Antarctic (not
Alaska) climate.
Most specs like the 5D2 but high ISO quality lower, similar price.

That actually causes more moisture than working continuously in
subfreezing conditions. If it took that, I'd say its living up to its
moisture-proof advertising...

I'm just taking my new 5DMII out of the box so I don't yet have direct
experience. However, I have "heard" through other groups that a piece of
electricians' tape over the shutter release will help with the moisture
issue - - that is if you want to shoot in the rain.

i haven't used mine in wet weather yet but i have used it in cool temperature (~25°F) and have not had a problem with condensation when going into a warm building.

one thing i do is put some electrical tape to seal between the camera body and vertical grip battery pack just to keep errant water away. i can only cover about 85% of the seam but i figure if it helps prevent some moisture from getting in, it's worth it.

I got off the SLR express years ago: I couldn't deal with the bulk/
weight (bodies and lenses), situation that's only worsened with the
better dSLRs. The 5D's form factor doesn't work for me at all. (Nor
does the Olympus E3's...I was really counting on Olympus to go
smaller than the big guys, but the only thing they shrank was the
sensor!)

I invested (heavily) in an "alternative" M-camera system Hexar RF)
quite some time ago, and have been content there, occasionally
grabbing the odd digital number to work on something special (think
really small camera with relatively large sensor). All this works
well for me.

Having said that: Paul, that's a *great* image. Glad to hear the
5DII's working out so far.
