So,

I live in the middle of the back of beyond in a fly speck town at
the edge of the Namib Desert. I have a ADSL connection and
pretty near state of the art PC horse power with CS4, LR2, Nikon
D3, Epson 2400, Bag full of lenses and a main street photography
gallery, one of very few in Southern Africa. I decide I want to
start printing my own large format images on canvas because I am
unhappy with the architectural firm that uses a big Roland to
print my work on canvas.

So I go to B & H and Adorama neither will sell me an Epson 9900
because Epson won't let them.

So I contact Epson's reps in Namibia asking for a price, they
don't even reply. I contact Epson South Africa and throw a
@#$%fit, finally get to their South African Distributors who are
happy to sell me an Epson 9900 for R130,000 + 15% tax, At today's
exchange rate that's USD16,537.6. I can buy two little Daihatsu
motor cars for that much money.

Epson RSA talks some bovine fecal matter about pricing being
dictated out of Dubai or the Netherlands, the end result is if I
want one, I have to organize it out of Asia or the US and
re-ship, and you know what I'll still save enough money to pay
cash for a car..

That's what I call a conspiracy and seriously FUBAR'D

PS. HP is exactly the same..

and I thought paying 25% more in the UK than US was unreasonable.....
but 200% more is just mind boggling. Mike

Chris , have you tried speaking to someone like Kevin Shoulder or the guys at Kameraz [in Jhb] perhaps? I also have my own "issues" with Epson RSA and UK , but 130k seems extreme even for those scumbags....
I know a few peeps in the business here I'll make some enquiries if you'd like?

Epson RSA get most of their supplies from Epson UK [they're in some way
affiliated] , so you start off with UK prices and then it goes downhill from
there......
Bottom feeders the lot of 'em.
