I have heard this program mentioned on this board as being able to cure banding when using MIS inks in an R1800. Can someone tell me what this program is? Is it part of the Epson driver or is it a seperate application? If the latter where does one get this software from? Thanks and regards Alistair

Hi Alistair, I got it here: http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml Haven't tried it yet so I can't report on it. It's a few years old, but these do appear to be the people who wrote it. If anyone knows better then please jump in. Regards, Ken --- On Tue, 4/14/09, hp9180profile <owens@...> wrote:

It's not SSC. That's a useful app but doesn't do anything about banding. The Epson service adjustment utility is made by Epson for Epson techs when they fix and reassemble a printer. You can run through various adjustment routines in order (i.e. select replace print head and it leads you through the steps) or a la carte. You can use the in-program help to assist you in figuring out how each of the steps works. It says use photo quality paper but I haven't had issues using plain paper (looks visually identical). Sounds like it is a useful program. Where does one find it? I have had a good look on the Epson site but can only download one for the 4000 and only a waste-ink counter resetter for the R1800. Is there another source you can point me too? If this can properly clear up banding on the R1800 then it will make it a much more versatile device. As it is, banding necessitates 3 channels for smooth BO printing, somewhat voiding the advantage of 8 ink positions. regards Alistair

Found this: http://www.mediafire.com/?22r33mltnfh . Does this look like the correct software? It installs OK and will run on Vista x64 in XP compatibility mode and there does not appear to be any malware associated with the code. Looks like it is intended for use after reinstallation or replacement of major components. It is kind of like the Epson Printer Service Utility 2 that I downloaded from the Epson site for the 4000 but a bit more primitive looking. It is version 1.1 rather than 2.0 which may explain things. Two modes are supported; sequential and random adjustment. Sequential allows screwing around with: -Main Board -PS Board -CR Motor -Eject Frame Assy -Printer Mechanism -PF Motor -Waste Ink Pad -Front Eject Roller -PF Roller Shaft -Printhead -CR Shaft/CR Unit -Ink Mark Sensor/PW Sensor -ASF Assy Random allows adjustment of: -EEPROM data copy -Destination setting -Initialise PF deterioration offset -Disenable PF deterioration offset -Input Head ID -Head Angular Adjustment -Ink Mark sensor adjustment and check -Initialise PF deterioration offset -Auto Bi-d adjustment -Manual Bi-d adjustment -PW adjustment -First dot position adjustment -PF adjustment -CR motor heat protection control plus a series of maintenance, check patterns and read functions. So Roger have you or anyone on the forum used this app and if so what should be adjusted to address banding? I am familiar with some of these components but not all and do not want to reduce an R1800 to scrap trying to work it out (but may have to in the interests of knowledge!). Many thanks Alistair

That sounds like the program. I think I told it I replaced the head and then walked through the steps. With each step you can click on the help icon and it will explain how to do the step (be warned, you need a metric ruler for one). It also has a 'read' feature which will tell you the values currently in your printer before you input new ones. Write it down in case you screw up. As I recall, PF, PW, first dot, Bi-D and first angular are the important ones. Start by printing all the test patterns as they will show you how your printer is working for each adjustment (and will give you a before to compare your adjustments to). Good luck, Roger --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "hp9180profile" <owens@...> wrote:

Unfortunately the Help function does not work on Vista so I may need to come back to you to clarify a point or two. regards Alistair

Might have spoken too soon. Found this: http://www.mediafir e.com/?22r33mltn fh .

-Printer Mechanism
-PF Motor
-Waste Ink Pad
-Front Eject Roller
-PF Roller Shaft
-Printhead
-CR Shaft/CR Unit
-Ink Mark Sensor/PW Sensor
-ASF Assy
Random allows adjustment of:
-EEPROM data copy
-Destination setting
-Initialise PF deterioration offset
-Disenable PF deterioration offset
-Input Head ID
-Head Angular Adjustment
-Ink Mark sensor adjustment and check
-Initialise PF deterioration offset
-Auto Bi-d adjustment
-Manual Bi-d adjustment
-PW adjustment
-First dot position adjustment
-PF adjustment
-CR motor heat protection control
plus a series of maintenance, check patterns and read functions.
