UT2 Inks in Epson 2200?

UT2 Inks in Epson 2200?

2009-05-04 by bskumar_in

A while back I bought UT2 inks for my 1290. I am still learning, but the 1290 has unfortunately bitten the dust. Can I use these inks in a 2200? I do not have any ink corresponding to the Light Black, but I do have the R800 Glop. I seem to remember that it can be used as a base for mixing inks. If the UT2 inks can be used in the 2200, can I use the Glop and the Eboni Black to make up the Light Black? What are the proportions? Thanks for any help.

They could be used, but new control curves/profiles would need to be made. If you're not experienced in this, it might be a frustrating effort.

An ink with approximately the LK density can be made with 18% Eboni and the remainder the clear base. This will probably not be very good on glossy paper even though it uses glop as the base. I've never tested it. Also, note that the UT7 LK was neutralized. An 18% Eboni solution will be less warm than a standard LK, but probably not as neutral as the UT7 LK.

You're introducing a lot of new variables that may take more effort to deal with. The only inks that are the same in the UT2 and UT7 inksets are the sepia toner and the warm carbon (UT2 M and LM, switched to UT7 C and LC).

Paul,

Thank you for the help. I guess using these inks in the 2200 would be more trouble than I can handle. I was quite happy with the prints from the 1290, except for the clogging. I'll try to find another used 1290. They're still sold new here in Japan as the PM-3700C.

Cheers,
Kumar

The 1280/1290 were capable of good printing, but they also have a reputation for clogging. The 2200 was much better in that respect. So, you might want to consider whether it's worth the frustration to save a couple bottles of ink.

Very interesting thread! I've been using UT2 Warm Tone inks in my 1280 using the CFS. While I've not really had the problems so many others report with this configuration I would like to take advantage of converting our Epson 2200 to b/w usage.

Based on what I've read here my bottles of UT2 will not do me much good. Between trying to get everything to work will in the printer sandbox I have to get it all to play together with Windows7.

What suggestions do you have to make the most of what I have to convert over to either a CFS system or standard cart system using the 2200.

Thanks, Mike
