really stupid question - epson profiles

2009-06-21 by AnnMarie

Hello everyone -

I am setting up my laptop to do printing now with my Epson 2400 and when I installed the driver, it didn't have the newer Epson profiles. I downloaded them from Epson's site, installed them but when I go to print, the choices are not there yet under "Paper Settings". Am I supposed to find the icc profiles on my hard drive and move them somewhere? On my older Mac, I had them but don't remember how they got there.

By the way, I am now the proud owner of a Samsung SyncMaster 2033 (20 inch) and so far so good! I am just trying to tweak the calibration a bit more.

Adding profiles is fine for custom use at the application level. But
it does not add media settings to the driver. You would need an
updated driver for that.

Hi AnneMarie:

First thing I would mention is that you have to restart Photoshop to see the new profiles, if you installed them while PS was running.

Second, the default location for icc profiles is HD/Library/Colorsync/Profiles. If they're not there they could be in System/Library/Colorsync/Profiles or in User/Library/Colorsync/Profiles. If not anywhere then open the disk image for the profiles and drag the profiles manually into the default location as mentioned above.

None of this will make them appear where she is looking for them (under the driver's paper settings); only in lists of custom profiles.

I add profiles all the time while Photoshop is open. To get it to recognize them on the fly, just go into the proof colors (view/proof setup/custom). This works on Windows, can't vouch for Macs.

Re: [Digital BW] really stupid question - epson profiles

2009-06-22 by Leslie Otterbein

Hi Roger:

This has been my experience on my Mac; but I have an older version of
PS. Will try that, thanks.

CD: I'm assuming AnnMarie has already some experience with printing to
her 2400, and knows that some paper choices are not available
depending on her choice of black ink. Maybe she meant the list of
custom profiles, and just wrote it wrong.

Works on both, as it forces Photoshop to reread the list of available profiles.

Thank you all for your responses. The profiles are where they should be (HD/Library/ColorSync/Profiles). I restarted Photoshop several times and they are still not showing up in my Paper Settings list. I am using matte black and the list still shows the default list of papers. I have the most updated driver installed.

Any other ideas?

Thank you again,

Hi AnnMarie,
paper settings and icc profiles are two different things.

Eg: for PremierArt Premium Matte I choose Watercolour Radiant White as the paper type, and my custom profile for PremerArt Premium Matte in the Photoshop print dialogue icc profile list.

Good luck,
Richard

Profiles in your ColorSync folder will not show up in your printer driver's list of available paper types; that simply isn't how it works. To use custom profiles, you must choose the media type in the driver that was used when the custom profile was built (hopefully the developer will tell you what that was), and set the driver to No Color Management (or similar setting), and use the custom profile by choosing it in, or on the way out of, a color managed application instead. Custom profiles use a different workflow from canned profiles provided by the manufacturer in the driver.

Subject: [Digital BW] Re: really stupid question - epson profiles

Thank you all for your responses. The profiles are where they should be
(HD/Library/ColorSync/Profiles). I restarted Photoshop several times and they
are still not showing up in my Paper Settings list. I am using matte black and 0Athe list still shows the default list of papers. I have the most updated driver
installed.

Any other ideas?

Thank you again,
AnnMarie

Re: really stupid question - epson profiles

Maybe I am not communicating clear here so let me try to explain again. All I want are the new paper settings to show up in the Paper Settings list in Photoshop.

When I had my old computer, I don't remember doing anything different than downloading those profiles off their website. There has to be a way the list will come up without me having to do anything?

Loading profiles does not change the paper settings in the printer driver. It only gives you access to those profiles which can then be used IN CONJUNCTION with the paper settings in the driver. The profiles would have been made with particular paper settings in the driver. Again, loading new profiles

AnneMarie:

When you are in Photoshop and you choose "Print with Preview", you
should be able to choose any of the new icc profiles that you
downloaded from Epson's site (I assume the "Premium ICC Printer
Profiles for the Stylus Photo R2400"). Choose "Color Management" and
you will see them in the Print Space (Profile) chooser at the bottom
of the window. The profiles you downloaded do not appear in any other
dialogue. You should delete the older profiles that the driver
installed, just so you don't choose them accidentally.

Further on in Epson's Print Dialogue you get to choose a media
setting, for example Epson Lustre or Glossy or canvas, etc etc., but
the profiles you downloaded will never appear in this dialogue.

Re: really stupid question - epson profiles

2009-06-25 by Jules

I struggled with profiles and the Epson/photoShop print software for years. I nearly died of distraction. Changing profile for a different paper I found more difficult than having a divorce or buying a house. The whole thing is designed to make you use their papers and make it as difficult as possible to use other manufacturers who have a wealth of better papers.
My solution was to buy Qimage professional version. If you haven't use it you are really missing out. not only is it not too expensive but worth every penny. New profiles are easy to save and use, you just choose tthem from your library of profiles, easy as that. And it lets you print more than one image on a sheet of paper. Why do Epson not think this is useful. U use an A2 printer and do all my batch printing on it and it is a joy. It even sorts out your different sized prints and saves paper in doing so. Qimages sharpening I reckon is better than PS's Unsharp Mask AND it works out the best resolution to print at for you printer, no worrying about setting it in advance.
Please do yourself a favour and get Qimage. I don't work for them or have anything to do with the company but I'm sure glad i discovered them. printing is now actually fun rather than a nightmare. I think it's digitals best kept secret.
 Jules

I downloaded them from Epson's site, installed them but when I go to print, the choices are not there yet under "Paper Settings". Am I supposed to find the icc profiles on my hard drive and move them somewhere? On my older Mac, I had them but don't remember how they got there.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
