Harman Gloss FB Al + Humidity = Edge Curl & Head Strikes

Harman Gloss FB Al + Humidity = Edge Curl & Head Strikes

2009-06-23 by Doug Fisher

I would appreciate any thoughts on methods to remove the slight curl at the
edges of Harman Gloss FB Al before putting it in the printer. I have been
doing some printing for the first time in a while with my R2400 and one
thing that has changed is that the humidity level is quite a bit higher
(Atlanta finally had a wet spring and the multi-year drought has been
broken).

The higher humidity (about 45% in the air-conditioned room with the printer)
has caused the Harman paper to curl at the edges on all four sides (both old
stock and freshly opened stock). The curl along the edge is pretty small in
width but fairly pronounced. It is just enough that I am getting head
strikes at one of the very top corners at the start of the printed page
(along the side) and sometimes at the very bottom of the page at one corner
(also along the sides). I left the paper out over night see if it would
flatten any after acclimating to the room but I didn't have any luck. The
platen is set for thin papers.

Any advice on what to do or not to do to remove the curl without damaging
the coating on the surface of the paper would be appreciated. If it were a
large gentle curve all the way across the paper, a reverse roll would
probably do the trick. Since the curl is just at the edges and the coated
surface is pretty delicate, I have been trying to bend it flat just using a
cotton gloved hand. Hopefully someone has a better method!

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Complain to Harmon, I did about the rolls and they pretended it was
not an issue. Maybe the more they hear about it the better.

I've been using the "reverse roll with my hand" method on the edges and it works well enough and doesn't seem to damage the coating if I'm careful.

That's probably my biggest annoyance with the paper. It also seems to buckle a bit after being printed on from all the ink.

Thanks for sharing what works for you. I guess being careful and doing it by hand one sheet at a time is the safe way to go, especially considering how expensive this paper is per sheet. I expected the paper to curl a bit after it got "wet"/loaded with ink but the degree of the humidity effect was a bit unexpected.

Thanks,

Doug

You mentioned in your original post that you are using the thin paper setting on the printer. Might simply going to a thicker paper setting work for you? Worth a try.

Also the paper does buckle with a fresh load of ink, but always flattens down nicely with drying.

This paper works brilliantly with the HP B9180 but is prone to head crash
marks thanks to paper curl from ink load causing the coating to swell. I
find I have very little trouble after dressing the paper so it is slightly
the inverse of its natural curl, but someone else on the
hp9100Series@yahoogroups.com list reports good results by slightly
dampening the back of the paper with a slightly damp cloth immediately
before printing.

I live in Vancouver BC Canada and for anyone who doesn't know we have
our share of humidity/precipitation. I set the platen gap to wider and
paper thickness to 5 mil on my epson 3800 (settings that were also
confirmed at a recent epson print academy day) and have no problems
at all when printing. I have noticed some minor paper buckling when
hinge mounting -especially on prints with heavy ink loads- but this is
to be expected with any paper imho.

The last 10 feet or so of every roll is useless because of the curl.

Is there any way to do this on a R1800?

There is a varient (at least with OSX) that may help. On the second driver page go to the box that defaults to Layout, then go to Extension Settings, there you will find a tick box for Thick Paer

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
