Moving PS

Moving PS

2009-07-05 by Vincent Orlando

I asked this question on other forums but did not get any answers.

Can I just drag the CS3 folder from 1 HD to another HD on the same computer. Having some minor problems with the HD that PS is on and I would like to install on my 2nd HD. Also would like to do the same with LR.

Uninstalling and reinstalling would require trying to find all the updates and installing them also.

The machine is a Mac G5 with dual HD.

Thanks

Photoshop can only be installed on 2 computers. You cannot drag it to
another computer. You have to un-install it as Adobe needs to be
notified of it's non use on THAT computer. If you have a compete
crash, as I did and could not un-install, you have to call adobe and
they will get you going with out the un-install. Be sure to have your
original full copy serial number handy, even it it as Photoshop 3 as
they will ask for it.

Just my experience.

Beware. I had to reinstall OS-X. I've been waiting over a week for
Adobe to deauthorize the "old computer" (the mysterious now gob=ne
forever earlier version of my very same computer). Until they get
their act together I can't use PS.

Don't want to install it on another computer, just move it from
1 HD to another HD on the same computer.

I think you my find that "an installation" is linked to the hard
drive. All I did was reinstall OS-X and swapped my Main drive with my
Media drive. I can't register PS.

I thinl that CS3 updates are cumulative, so installing the base product then checking for updates will make that happen.

I would uninstall the original product, then reinstall on your other drive and then run updates. Cleanest solution

Hope this helps

And I would deauthorize your computer before doing so. Then
reauthorize once you've done the reinstallation.

Vinny,
I use Carbon Copy Cloner once a week to clone my main HD
to a second internal HD and one external HD. I am able to use
PS on both external drives after booting from them. I believe this
is possible because all files related to Adobe and PS are copied.
You can not just drag and drop the PS folder to another drive
because it needs ALL the related files.

So the problem is that you never know if the restore of your system disk
will work unless you actually try and successfully do it.
If you have a spare disk I would back up your system disk - replace it with
the spare one and try and restore to it.
Most restore software is a bit picky on PC as to exactly your hardware
config (because there are so many), without doing a restore you'll never
know if your system backup is useful or just a waste of time.

If you don't have a spare disk you can still do a dummy system disk
(partition) restore and take the process all the way until it actually
starts to do the restore. At least that way you'll have a pretty good idea
if your restore software can work with your hardware config (mainly the
problem is hard disk controller /motherboard support).

Personally I use Acronis and it has some quirks, but I found a build that
works with my config and I can be back up and running in 30 - 60mins from a
system disk crash.

I see that the g4l project has moved along a little, I'll download and try it on Monday to see how well it works. I have Ghost corporate at work, and it definitely functions properly.

The most simple method would be to get an extra hard drive and connect it to the computer. Clone from the system drive to the extra drive, then unplug the system drive and reboot to see if it works.

Seagate has a free version of Acronis that only works if you have a Seagate drive. On their web site. Even an external connected via USB is OK.

I have a bunch that I clone to.

Re: Moving PS

2009-07-06 by bertgf

OK, here goes. I am on a PC, I don't know MACs.
When you install software the installation links your software to the drive. You cannot just move the folder to another HD. You have to uninstall it and re-install it.
Now as far as Photoshop is concerned you may install it on multiple machines. You may only have it 'activated' on 2 machines. The concept is for you to have one copy on your desktop machine and one on your laptop. Before you uninstall PS be sure to 'de-activate' that installation. If you don't or your system crashes Adobe will make it hard for you get a new activation. They will give it to you eventually or right away depending on who you get. Adobe support is quite variable.
My system crashed and I had to deal with getting a new activation. It was a bear to put it nicely.

In my opinion g4l is not ready for most users, so I would say don't bother trying yet.

This looks promising:
http://ping.windowsdream.com/ping.html

Going to have to try this and see if I can store complete disk backups of our Macs (which our Ghost doesn't seem to want to work for) so that I can fix problems that the students create much faster than going back to the install media. Run through the online documentation/tutorial and see what you think, might be the best, easiest, and free choice to be made to permanently store a complete backup.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
