I am currently looking for recommendations on image management software. I have seen a few programs advertised like FotoStation, Cumulus, and DigitalPro. I would like to hear about peoples preferences, likes and dislikes. Thanks Mike

They want the file saved "with backward compatibility" which essentially saves a flattened copy with the layered version. Needless to say this increases file size significantly. Frankg

I looked before Christmas, got the impression that it was a toss-up between Cumulus and Portfolio, and got Extensis' Portfolio for my Mac. I haven't used it because it's about to be upgraded from 5 to 6, and I thought it might be easier to wait and just learn 6. Sam

On a Mac give a good long look at iView Media Pro. It handles my multi layered 500mb non backward compatible PSD files with ease, as well as anything else I throw at it. Todd

It seems that the single user version on Cumulus is $99, but the workgroup version is VERY expensive. I will check out Extensis. I just noticed that my Nikon D1X came with Cumulus, but it looks like a watered down version. I will examine it further this evening. Thanks Mike

Tim, I use Cumulus 5.5(the update has just been released from 5.0.1). Its an all-encompassing data management system for almost every digital photographic, video and audio material you can think of at present. It is a bit hard to master at first and as most of the image database programs do, requires a fair amount of data input, especially if you plan to do searches in a large database. The directories can be custom tailored as in the Windows explorer tree and data (records) can be associated with the assets (actual pictures, etc.) The newest version allows for better IPTC support with such programs such as Photoshop 6.0. Also the newer version has a new feature, which is a palette view mode, and if youre on a network improved support for Server data transfer and a slide show function. I have tried a few other programs such as U lead Photoexplorer and this program seems to satisfy my needs particularly when it comes to associated data such as film type, aperture, lens info shutter speed as well as digital record data such as white balance, metering mode etc., It also can accommodate copyright inclusion. It is available on-line @ www.canto.com. Hope this gives you some idea of this fine program [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I use iMatch (only available on a Windows platform) and am generally satisfied with it. It's a powerful program and very customizable via a built-in scripting language, but it is also quite new and very much still in-the-works. However, the author is open to suggested enhancements and has lots of things of his own that he wants to add. If you are on a PC, it's worth a look at the evaluation version at www.photools.com. - David
