Frank, I have had success using "spot pens" comes in a package of 10 black 
and white toned pen brushes loading with "photographic retouching dyes". Made 
for silver prints and honestly I've only spotted the deepest blacks. Pencil 
actually works very well in the lighter tones.

Frank,

Another great method is is to keep a small bit of ink in the little jars
that contact lenses come in. I get these from the place I but contacts from.
I the pour off a bit of ink from the larger jars. Using a 000 or 00 spotting
brush I can spot with inks that match the print exactly.
