fine art papers

2002-02-15 by piotrjanowski

Hello,
Firs of all I feel bad for only asking questions on this great forum.
It seems that I only want to find something out and don't want to
contribute myself.
Well, the main problem behind this, is that I myself am struggling
with the basics still.(last night was sleepless again. Many, many
testprints)
I have been using now the MIs VM set on the EAM paper for quiete a
while. I am very pleased with the results.
However I am considering to try some of the fine art papers that can
be used with the Quadtones.
My problem is that in my country(Poland) it is virtually impossible
to get any of these papers. I will have to order them just like my
inks from the US.(or maybe there are some readers in Germany? Any
links where I can order these papers there? Is much closer)
My question therefore is; what would You recommend as very good thick
fine art paper for MIS VM? I'd rather order one or two different
papers than spent money on shipping of samplepacks(I am sure the
costs will be more than the samplepack itself)
So, let's say I would like to order 2 or maybe even 3 different type
of papers?( I hope my wife doesn't read this.)
 What would be Your choice??
Any advice on that will be appreciated.

Another question.
I know it is not a fine art paper, but I just got the Kodak Ultima
Satin. It feels like a RC, which I personally don't like but
sometimes people ask me if I could print something for them on that
kind of paper.
What paper settings do You use? Is spraying essential?
I read some time ago on the list that people had positive comments on
that paper. I tried the Epson Semigloss and that was a disaster.

Greeting to everybody

Hi Piotr,

I'mn afraid I do not use MIS VM, so I can not give you constructive advice
on which papers print well with the basic MIS VM curves. However, if the
recommendations you receive are for any Hahnemuhle papers (or Somerset) I
may well be able to supply them from the UK.

As to my own personal favourite papers with Piezo inks, I like Photo Rag,
William Turner and German Etching (oh, and Torchon).

Piezo BW inks print well on Ultima Satin, but do require a finishing
spray-coat, so I imagine that VM inks would print fairly similarly. You will
need a spray coating, but I don't have any particular recommendation on that
one.

Take a look at the web-site below!

Best wishes,
Nij

Re: [Digital BW] fine art papers

2002-02-15 by Steadman Uhlich

Dzen Dobri Piotr,

I have opinions for you....but remember they are just one persons opinions, but based on testing many different fine art papers (but using PiezoBW inks!) so here you go...

1. If I had to pick only one paper to use for fine art prints....Hahnemuhle PhotoRag 308gsm

2. If I had a second to go with it...Hahnemuhle German Etching or William Turner (about 310gsm).
Difference? William Turner is 100% rag cotton while the German Etching (also known as Orwell in Inkjetmall.com) is alpha cellulose (also acid free).

3. If I wanted a texture to show in my fine art prints....Hahnemuhle Torchon (about 285gsm?)

I have tried many other papers made by other manufacturers, but so far the best results for me using the PiezoBW inks have been on the above three papers.

I also bought the Kodak Ultima Satin when everyone first noticed it. I tried many sheets (I bought several packs) and gave up as the results do not look as good (to me) as the other papers available (see above).

Hahnemuhle is located in Germany. Perhaps they have a Polish distributor and outlets. They are a large paper company. Search the net for (now I can't remember the name of the parent company...S&S initials stands for ?? Steichler & Strund or something like that...??) and send an email asking for local sources. The have global distribution.

Good luck and clean nozzles,
Steadman

Piotr,

I agree with Steadman's choice of papers. I would add some of the
Schollershammer papers, such as Velvet and Linen (a good alternative
to canvas that takes MIS archival inks). I am using MIS VM-HEX also.
I am supprised that you are unable to get Hahnemühle and
Schollershammer papers locally since they are both old established
German paper manufacturers. Write to Karen at Digital Art Supplies
<mailto:Karen@...>Karen@... and
see what she can do for you.

Re: fine art papers - in Poland

2002-02-15 by antonisphoto

Piotr,

I am glad to see you on our list. I hope we can be of help.

First, I have to say I agree with Steadman's recommendations. These are
pretty safe bets for starting out and those of us who have been printing
piezoBW have been using these for some time now.

Here is info on Hahnemuelle:
Hahnemuhle
Unit 11, Brunswick Park Industrial Estate,
London N11 1JL,
Tel: (020)8 368 5577
Fax: (020)8 368 1331

Of course, if you end up buying from the UK, by all means talk to Nij. But I am
posting this in case they can point you to Polish outlets, more convenient for
you. Their web address is simply:

http://www.hahnemuhle.com/

Parent company is Schleicher & Schuell.

We also have a "list friend" in Germany, Bernd Langmack who knows
Hahnemuehle quite well. You may contact him at: ruhrfoto@...

Good luck

Antonis

Pjotr,
I second everything Steadman told you.
I myself use MIS VM with Hahnemühle Photo Rag.
There are several alternatives which are cheaper - but not better,
as far as I know.
For a distributor in Poland contact:
feinpapiere@... (www.s-und-s.de)
S&S stands for Schleicher and Schuell, which is the mother of
Hahnemuhle.
A German distributor is:
www.photolux.de
Send me your street address and I send you a sample pack of
Hahnemühle papers.
Bernd

I would like to Thank
Nij, Steadman, Jim, Antonis, Martin, Roger and Bernd for all their
advice on fine art paper.
And guess what: You guys helped me to track down a dealer of
Hahnemuhle in Poland!!!!!
I finally found a company which distributes products of Schleicher
and Schuell. I was looking for Hahnemuhle, because I had no idea that
S&S is the mother company and that I should rather look for them.
I also ordered a pack of Photo Rag 308 right away. Now I can't wait
to get my hands on that paper.!!
Many Greetings,
 Piotr Janowski
