Generations Alise Dmax

Generations Alise Dmax

2009-12-17 by ClaytonJ

Hello All,

Does anyone know if the Dmax of Generations Alise Museum (non OBA version) is as good as Generations Alise Photo (BW version w/ OBAs)?

I have run a test of the BW version with K3-ABW (2400) and I like it. The Dmax, while not as good as VFA, is very good. I am interested in the Museum version but have not been able to obtain a sample for testing. Has anyone here used it? Thanks very much.

Regards,
Clayton

Clayton, I did not make color UCK3 setups for both to have comparison info for Epson OEM MK, but with Cone inks, they are virutally the same, certainly within measurement margin of error.
Good paper, both versions.

I believe they are the same. With Eboni in the 1400 I show a dmax of as low as Lab L = 14.13 with the natural. Other tests with the BW and Natural are in the mid-14 - low L 15 range.

Clayton, I answered once but it never appeared, so forgive me if this comes up twice. I can confirm Paul's post, direct comparisons of several Piezotone setups on both are the same, within measurement margin of error. I did not do UCK3 setups on both, so don't have OEM comparisons, but I would expect similar behavior.
Good papers.

I have printed both and prefer the Natural...the OBAs visually get in the way to my eye. The Natural is not as yellow as some of the nonOBA papers. The biggest drawback to the sheets I printed is that they have a pronounced curl...head strike issues.

Premier tells me the first runs did not have a back side sizing to make it lay out flat. Not sure if this has been corrected yet.

Clayton,

I have an almost full box of Generations Alise, Museum Grade, that I've tried. A full box contains 50 sheets, I've used ten sheets. I've had trouble getting it to load in my R1800, even when feeding from the back. I like the prints when they come through, I can't measure the DMax but I was happy with it.

Would you be interested in buying what I have? I got it from Atlex for $43.99 and would sell it for half that. I'll cover shipping. I've gone back to using PremierArt's Fine Art, it's 205 gm/sqm and the Alise is 260, so I have less trouble loading it. Maybe its DMax is not up to the Alise, I don't' know, but I'm satisfied with it.

It's all wrapped up in the original plastic covering, in the original box.

Paul

OK, Rich... guess I'd better wait a bit for Clayton to respond, but if he doesn't want it, it's yours. What kind of printer do you have? Like I say, my R1800 just couldn't handle it very well.

Thanks!

Yes, VERY similar look and performance. But since this is the b&w list, there is one distinction worth mentioning to those using monochromatic inks and sensitive to the subtleties of print hue... the Alise prints cooler, the Canson coating warmer..
I keep mentioning this, just assuming this particular group might find it important. Obviously with an OEM approach, or a tintable mono inkset, this would be less important.

Tyler,

How would Neutral k7 print, cooler?, and selenium K7 ( too blue) ?

I remember with the Premiere Art Hotpress (Epson UltraSmooth) the neutral K7 inks were actually really way cold.... How would this paper perform with K7 Carbon Sepia? Probably cooler too? With the HpZ3100 and the straight gray only inks, I assume cooler also, which would be too cool.

Might be just a good paper for color work for me.

honestly can't say as I don't have those ink sets loaded here. It's still in the general range of what I was getting on HPR, the selenium just a bit cooler, and the warm just a hair less rich.
I guess you'd have t try it to know. I recall Jon saying the Rag Photo Canson coating took his K7 Selenium set brownish. But Piezotone Seleniums look normal on it. I think the K7 sets react more dramatically with coatings then their Piezotone counterparts. Since the other Premiere Art papers reacted uniquely to your NK7s (and I have a sample print here from you, so I know what you mean) it could be that the Alise may do the same since their coatings are probably similar.

The way specific ink sets react with specific coatings has always been mysterious... but something that can be exploited of course.
