Digital BW, The Print

If so, what's the best alternative anyone has found?

Has the Matte BW paper been replaced by the Premier Art Smooth BW Fine Art paper? Or are they totally different papers?

Take a look at Red River papers -- http://www.redrivercatalog.com/  

I've been rather impressed with the papers -- good and very good values.

Be very careful with these Red River papers. Many of them simply glow with the saturated obas and get you all excited until they shift. 

Personally I've found their Premium Matte and Polar Matte to have oba burn out within  a couple of year, and that is even in dark storage! . From  bright white to dead gray in the paper base, even when sprayed. I think you get what you pay for.
