Photoshop version 5.0 ok for newbie?

Photoshop version 5.0 ok for newbie?

2002-02-20 by John Schubert

Hi:

We're just starting out. We have little Photoshop experience,
if any. What we do have is Photoshop version 5.0.

My specific question to the group is: Should we IMMEDIATELY
upgrade to Photoshop version 6.0?

I know the price of the upgrade is only $160 or so, but
can we learn with verion 5.0 and put the $160 towards inks, papers,
etc?

If you do say that we should upgrade a reason would be really
helpful for us. For example:

"Version 6 has Feature Y that will literally save you thousands
of hours of having to use Feature X in Version 5.0"

or

"Most of the methods, workflows will have to be adapted to
version 5.0 and you'll end up wasting lots of time/ink/paper"

Thanks.

John,

you have a lot to learn. Eventually you will upgrade. Should you spend the
money now or in a few months? Your call.

But, I would say you can easily stay in v.5.5 and get everything done you need
to do. And, yes, you got good advice from others here, but what you will learn
in PS 5 will not go to waist and you will not loose anything by staying in it for a
while. In fact when you move to 6 ... or 7 by then (another reason to wait?),
you'll appeciate what they've done with color management and previews etc.

If you can get a used or borrowed copy of Real World Photoshop 5, that will
give you something to do (!) while waiting to buy the next upgrade.

<jump-start tip: do not use sRGB in your RGB space, go for Adobe98 until you
know enough to make your own choice>

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
